It’s our wedding anniversary this weekend, so Mrs P and I are living it up in Birmingham, of all places, but most importantly we are unencumbered by the multitude of cuttings children. Still, being away for the weekend is no excuse for missing a Six post, so let’s go. Time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a job to do, a leaf, a tool, a project, a pest, anything at all. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Hosta leaf. By rights this should have shrivelled up and disappeared by now, but this hosta is lingering. The leaves have turned a fetching (if slightly anaemic) shade of orange.
2 – Cornus mas alba, stems. Last weekend I cleared all the pesky jasmine that was obscuring the stems of this dogwood. It’s one I’ve featured before but now the leaves have all dropped and the stems are very much in evidence. Nice and red after I pruned it right back early spring. I shall be doing the same thing next spring, I’ll use these stems as supports for perennials. Cunning plan!
3 – Perovskia, russian sage. I’ve two of these from hardwood cuttings taken last year. I’m expecting them to be garden-worthy next spring, I just need to cut them back to get good stems.
4 – Sidalcea ‘wine red’. A pity-bench purchase at some point over the summer, it is thinking about flowering. It’s a clump forming perennial, with round leaves. It should flower in July and August, spikes of (clue’s in the name) wine red, saucer shaped flowers. It is languishing in a pot for now, but will do mid-border duty next year, location to be confirmed.
5. Geum’s galore. I have bought a few over the last couple of months, all clearance bargains. I have merrily divided them all as I got them home, so now have a little backlog of geums to plant out. They are a mix of ‘Totally Tangerine’ and ‘Lady Stratheden’, orange and yellow respectively. Love a geum.
6. Erica australis ‘Amy Doncaster’ . Another pity-bench purchase (do you detect a recurring theme?). It’s evergreen, a tree heather of sorts I think. It should eventually get to about 150cm. Originally found by the titular Amy as a seedling in her garden in Chandler’s Ford about a zillion years ago. That’s about all I know. Must plant it somewhere.
That’s my Six for this week, what are yours? If you’d like to join in, and please do, just add a comment below with a link to your post, and maybe a link back to this blog in yours. For more details you can find the participants’ guide here.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, don’t forget to check back in over the next couple of days as more Six posts get added.
I’ll be back next Saturday with another Six.
Happy Anniversary! Reading these posts is so refreshing..I miss being away from all things garden for so many weeksx

I love Perovskia but can never get it to behave in the border. I’m a Linkstake fan but it still seems to manage to flop over even when surrounded by the stakes early in the season. Keep trying!
Here’s my six for this week – I thought I’d managed to get a picture at the top of my post but was obviously mistaken! Again!

I’ll be happy if the perovskia grows at all…the cuttings have had a tenuous existence. The flopping I’ll attempt to deal with. Do you cut it back to the ground for the winter? Maybe it needs anither trim in the spring, stop it getting so leggy?

Well I didn’t know Ribes laurifolium ‘Amy Doncaster’ and now I do. Although I grew a form of it in my yoof and wonder if that was what I had.

It’s not commonly found Jim, I managed to pick up a plant from edulis when I ordered some snowdrops, it’s a much more purple form of laurifolium, very beautiful

I’m with you on the love of Geums! ‘Totally Tangerine’ is one of mine as well. I’ve been enjoying orange in the garden more and more each year. I also have a reddish Geum whose name escapes me this morning.
Congratulations on the anniversary! (#50 for us come next May)

Since following Six for about a month, I’ve added 4 pages of interesting plants in my garden notebook. Today, Russian sage joins that lot. What I should be doing is finding a support group for plant addicts. But I won’t. Here’s my Six instead! https://lorahughes.blogspot.co.uk/2017/11/doodle-disruptia.html

Use willow for supports and they will ALL grow. Happy anniversary. I didn’t think Cornus alba rooted all that easily, not that I’ve ever tried. You do well on pity bench purchases, I can never find anything I want on our local one. My six are here: https://gardenruminations.wordpress.com/2017/11/25/six-on-saturday-25-11-2017/

I still have hosta leaves in the garden as well 🍂which is almost unheard of around here! The forsythia has tiny blossoms. It will be interesting to see what happens in the spring

First things first, happy anniversary. It looks like you and I have the same “problem” – lots of things in pots that we need to find somewhere for. I also have an extra problem. Every delivery of plants, be it roses or whatever, seems to be coming with, wait for it, a free pack of bulbs (or two free packs). I’m reduced to making holes in lawns now. Either that or waste the bulbs, which seems a pity. My (highly controversial) six is over in the usual place at http://rivendellgarden.blog.

Bulbs. Sick of them.

OK. So you won’t be interested in Parkers’ bulb sale (email subscriber exclusives) then. Order enough and they’ll send you two free packs of bulbs with your bulb order too!

Definitely not…

Controversial indeed. Poor saintly Monty. And the RHS, seems to be the shows you disapprove of.

Shows are a comparatively minor thing (and it’s mainly Chelsea). It’s the whole elitist ethos of the RHS that gets me. C’mon! Would you handle seedlings like that and expect them to live? They’re advertising a course! Join the HPS folks! It’s much more friendly, helpful, local ….. And it’s run by people with gardens, not estates!

If they were that big I might. Obviously the HPS is a winner. Considering an RHS membership for Xmas. Wisely not far away and the seed scheme looks good.

Happy wedding anniversary to you both! When using the cornus stems as supports, don’t you have regrowths? That’s sometimes my problem… I prefer to use bamboos.

Maybe, yes. I only thought of doing it this year. I might buy a willow or hazel plant to coppice each year tonget stems for this purpose.
