Greetings from a positively tropical Royal Berkshire. It has been a glorious few days, sadly office-bound for me, for the most part. The garden has been enjoying the sunshine, everything is growing on strong, including the pesky weeds. Especially bindweed. It has become a nightly ritual for me to go armed with a hand-fork to dig as much of it up as I can. More appears the next day. Constant vigilence like this does weaken it significantly. I will still get the odd bit popping up from a root fragment, but much easier to manage. There is a brief window of opportunity to tackle it – while the rest of the planting is still getting going, the bindweed is clearly visible. There are nights when I go to sleep thinking about it. Weird. Anyhoo, time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a weed (!), a flower, a plan, a failure, interesting foliage, a seedling, anything at all. Join in!

Here are my Six for this week. You may notice a theme….

1 – Tulip ‘Brown Sugar’. A sultry blend of colours. Like.

2 – Tulip ‘Dynasty’. A pleasing shade of pink with creamy white accents. More by luck than judgment, I seem to have grouped together three pots so have achieved something of a mass planting effect.

3 – Tulip ‘Purple flag’ & ‘Flaming flag’. At the time of planting it seemed like a good idea to put these two together, I think it works quite well.

4 – Tulip ‘Orange dynasty’. These might be my favourite. I like the mix of orange and pink in these.

5 – Tulip ‘White Dream’. These were planted in a pot with Queen of the Night, aiming for a nice contrasting black and white effect. Sadly Queenie is disgracefully late, so the white’uns are putting in a creditable solo performance.

6 – Tulip ‘Abu hassan’, Rich and velvety, allegedly very perennial. A little close in appearance to both Orange Dynasty and Brown Sugar. I like it well enough but in the back of my mind, I wish I’d ordered something more different. All the excuse I need to buy more this Autumn. Like I need an excuse!

That’s my Six for this week. I make no apology for my tulip focused single-mindedness! The tulips are fabulous this year, repaying many times over the tedious bulb-planting back in the Autumn. I hope these will last a while yet, and there’s still plenty of flower power to come with later blooming varieties.

I’ll be back next week with another Six on Saturday.
