It has turned a little cool again, but everything is growing like crazy. I am doing the greenhouse hokey-cokey, moving things in, out, in out to harden off. The slugs are beginning to assert themselves. They are still teeny, but will soon be strapping, muscular fellas, only too willing to munch my lovely plants. I suspect they have already eaten my carrot seedlings. Constant vigilence required. Time for Six on Saturday – Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything. A flower, a pest, a plan, a failure, wildlife, foliage, anything at all. Join in!
Here are my Six.
1 – Dicentra spectabilis. Or Lamprocapnos. Or bleeding heart. I featured this only a couple of weeks ago for the foliage, but now it is flowering away. Weird shape for a flower.
2 – Heuchera, ‘Purple palace’. I have a few of these dotted around. The underside of the leaves is even more vivid in colour than the topside.
3 – Resurrection. I was convinced this gaura was dead, finished off by the various beastly weather spells, just sticks remained above ground. Today, however, a closer inspection revealed new growth. This is excellent news, I enjoyed this plant last year. I will try to get some cuttings to root this year. What do you mean I don’t need more plants? Ridiculous.
4 – Plant supports. I made a stack of these a while back. I have been distributing them about the garden, just in the nick of time it seems. This monarda was well below the grid when I put them out, but now it is almost growing through the grid.
5 – Hyabells, or blueacinths. I featured the emerging shoots of these a couple of months back, unsure what they were. I thought they might be hyacinth, others thought bluebells. Well I can confirm they are bluebells, the invading Spanish variety – the grey squirrel of the bluebell world. There is a veritable armada of them for me to deal with. I don’t mind the flowers, but I don’t want them to take over. They are apparently very vigourous and difficult to get rid of as they seed and leave teeny bulblets all over the place. I will be attempting to dig them up this weekend.
6 – Tulip ‘angelique’. Rude not to include a tulip this week, so here is Angelique. She’s a crinkly lass, a little rose-like in appearance from the top.
That’s my Six for this week, what are yours? If you’d like to join in, just write your blog post (or facebook thingy, or twitter thread), then add a comment below with a link to yours, and maybe include a link to this blog in yours. For more details you can read the brief guide.
Have a fab weekend in the garden, don’t forget to check back in as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back with another Six next Saturday, when it will be the first anniversary of this here meme. Exciting!
Lovely dicentra. Seems rather rude to throw away those bluebells.. I know you need to, this is just the thrifty me talking. =P
Don’t have a six this week..or rather, i do have six things, but no time to post them! will enjoy going through other posts though.
have a good week!

Lovely 6 as ever. I have a major battle with the Spanish bluebells. I thought I could admire them in a wild patch of the garden but alas they have popped up in all my borders this year so I spent time yesterday (and will be back at it today) pulling them out. The problem is my neighbour allows them to go bonkers in her garden; we are talking a whole acre lawn full of them. As you say, the flowers are beautiful but they spread and invade.

My infestation is a throwback to the “before gardening” era when the front garden was a weedy mess. I only got around to sorting it out last June but left the bluebells in place. This town ain’t big enough for the both of us so it is off to the council green bin for them.

This weekend I shall try and make more of an effort to visit other SoSes (?) I have just been outside to check on the S&S population, plant up some new pelargoniums and check on any signs of life on my dead twigs in the ground! Isn’t it great when you discover that there is? Lovely sunshine today, but a chilly wind blowing. Still finding chopped off tulips heads (Brown Sugar suffering the most) and the stems are peculiarly curling. Shall have to post this and see if anyone else has had a similar problem this year. Meanwhile another six weeds from me, but ones that I am happy to give garden room to. Enjoy the rest of the weekend Prop š

I would include AngĆ©lique too, but I have not added them (yet) in this garden. I have seen pictures in catalogs showing an orange “Angelique” too.
I see that bleeding hearts are cheering folks up on this week’s SOS and have included the Pacific Northwest version in mine. The bluebells are out today here as well! I’ll be absent next week, off to Toronto.
I actually had to set up the hoses yesterday. Even the Hellebores were wilting!

I haven’t turned on my drip irrigation system yet. If there are problems it’s still too chilly to fix them. Maybe next week. Wish we could send some of our Maryland rain your way although when it’s dry and in the 90’s this summer, I’ll still be complaining.

It’s a pity the Spanish Bluebells are so invasive eh? The flower is quite lovely. Reminds me of the invasive variety of blue Campanula we have here. Once the roots get in the ground it’s almost impossible to get rid of it – and they spread so quickly! Tulips are starting in Ontario as well!

Any advice on how to handle slugs. Fred suggested wood ash from the fireplace and I have done that. But I don’t know if it stands up to rain. I also squirt them with ammonia mixed with water. That kills them.

Love it too! My trusty pencil (ikea freebie) split in two this week, sob. Good idea to have the handy book with planting details in, I’m always running back and forth checking planting distances and depths. But I’m coming to the conclusion that a hoe’s width plus a bit is a good guide, then you can get at the weeds.

Ah well, I’ve given up on the new English bluebells I planted and the old clump that I thought was English has turned out to be Spanish. All I can do, like you, is make a big hole this year and a few smaller ones next year in the hope of finally removing them. You need to dig a bit out from the clump and a bit deeper than you think and get rid of everything. Refill with fresh topsoil. Don’t forget to grow that thumbnail for the slugs. My six is at https://rivendellgarden.blog/?p=3528 today,

The greenhouse hokey-cokey and assertive slugs are all too familiar. Bluebells too, though there are no big stands of wild ones nearby so I’m not trying hard to eradicate them. Containment is my modest goal. Your woven plant supports have given me an idea, for pea supports. https://wp.me/p6bCCa-1vX
