Six on Saturday! Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything: a flower, a bug, foliage, a tool, a job to do, a success, a failure, anything at all. Join in, do!

Here are my Six for this week.

1 – Geum ‘totally tangerine’. I always imagine that said in the mid-atlantic voice of a teenager. “it was, like, totally tangerine dahling”. I bought one or two of these as big plants in a clearance sale last summer, then promptly divided them. I now have too many, just one of which is planted out in the border. They are all flowering away.

2 – Aquilegia x ‘greenapples’. White-apples more like! These start off greenish as they open but eventually fade to white-ish. They’re a double flower, resembling clematis, allegedly. I grew these from seed last year, they didn’t do much then but are coming into their own now. I’ve a lot of them, not sure if I want to keep them all.

3 – Pittosporum flowers. I did not know this shrub flowered, I guess I’ve never looked at it that closely before. They are teeny and browny-purple. Who knew?

4 – Blueberry flowers. I just have one blueberry bush, it has NEVER fruited. I was going to dig it up to replace with more raspberry canes when I noticed it is at least doing an impression of flowering, giving a hint of future fruit. I mulched with ericacious compost this year, perhaps that is what made the difference. I will probably get enough fruit to have with my cereal for one breakfast. That’s if the birds don’t get the first. Perhaps I should dig it up anyway…

5 – Tulip ‘Queen of the night’. There’s very little left of the tulips now. Just queenie here, a few ‘seadov’ and the remains of ‘angelique’, who seems to have admirable sticking power.

6 – Allium ‘somethingorother”. I think it’s ‘purple sensation’, but I’m not sure. I planted 5 different varieties last autumn and was a bit slack with my labelling. Once they’re all up I should have half a chance to figure out which is which. The alliums are taking over from the tulips, the spring colour baton has been successfully handed on.
