Six on Saturday! Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything: a flower, a bug, foliage, a tool, a job to do, a success, a failure, anything at all. Join in, do!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Geum ‘totally tangerine’. I always imagine that said in the mid-atlantic voice of a teenager. “it was, like, totally tangerine dahling”. I bought one or two of these as big plants in a clearance sale last summer, then promptly divided them. I now have too many, just one of which is planted out in the border. They are all flowering away.
2 – Aquilegia x ‘greenapples’. White-apples more like! These start off greenish as they open but eventually fade to white-ish. They’re a double flower, resembling clematis, allegedly. I grew these from seed last year, they didn’t do much then but are coming into their own now. I’ve a lot of them, not sure if I want to keep them all.
3 – Pittosporum flowers. I did not know this shrub flowered, I guess I’ve never looked at it that closely before. They are teeny and browny-purple. Who knew?
4 – Blueberry flowers. I just have one blueberry bush, it has NEVER fruited. I was going to dig it up to replace with more raspberry canes when I noticed it is at least doing an impression of flowering, giving a hint of future fruit. I mulched with ericacious compost this year, perhaps that is what made the difference. I will probably get enough fruit to have with my cereal for one breakfast. That’s if the birds don’t get the first. Perhaps I should dig it up anyway…
5 – Tulip ‘Queen of the night’. There’s very little left of the tulips now. Just queenie here, a few ‘seadov’ and the remains of ‘angelique’, who seems to have admirable sticking power.
6 – Allium ‘somethingorother”. I think it’s ‘purple sensation’, but I’m not sure. I planted 5 different varieties last autumn and was a bit slack with my labelling. Once they’re all up I should have half a chance to figure out which is which. The alliums are taking over from the tulips, the spring colour baton has been successfully handed on.
Those are my Six, what are yours? Join in! if you’d like to, just write your post, facebook thingy or twitter thread and post a link down in the comments below. If you also add a link back to this blog in your Six that would be lovely too. For more details you can see the brief participant guide.
Have a great weekend, hope you get some sunshine. Don’t forget to check back in as more links are added during the day.
I’ll be back next week with another Six on Saturday.
My blueberries are flowering for the first time this year, as well – after three years of waiting. You’re right about the birds and some people put netting over the bushes, but my daughter, who lives nearby, does nothing and gets lots of berries one year and next to nothing the next year. She’s been at it a lot longer than I have.

No nothing that sophisticated. I have a Samsung s8 phone which has a really great camera. I just pinch-zoom and try to hold the thing steady. I sometimes crop the image after to tidy up but no filters or effects and such.

Lovely choices! I’m a sucker for aquilegias and have been known to dig up the tiny self-sown seedlings instead of hoeing them off, or to let them grow where they will.
Your Six on Saturday inspired me to start a blog, so I blame you… :~)) It’s here: https://thepleasuregardener.blog/
Thank you for the inspiration…

I only noticed those weird flowers on the pittosporum this year too. They are so tiny and slightly weird. Lovely post. Haven’t done one this week. Will do soon though.

We saw a wonderful combination of Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ with pure white tulips in Bourton House Garden, Moreton-in-the-Marsh yesterday. The tulips would obviously come through first followed later by the alliums but we caught it at just the moment they were sitting so beautifully together. T’was a great combination.

Hello there, enjoying your spring colour, I particularly like the colour of the allium, my kind of pink/purple. I love blueberries and we have a reasonable harvest. For flavour look for pink lemonade, it is gorgeous a little sweeter, pale pink berries with a slight citrus tang lovely. Anyway here is my #six-on-saturday https://betagardengirl.wordpress.com/

Wow! Back already? I never even got through half the posts last week, but I shall try harder. If only we were neighbours I could take some of those Geums and Aquilegia off you. Apparently Geums like damp shady areas and I have one of those.
My post this week comes from a lovely Japanese garden which may give people some ideas of what to plant if they have a damp and shady garden:
https://cornwallincolours.wordpress.com/2018/05/12/six-on-saturday-japanese-garden/
Unfortunately mine is far too windy, and if I planted lots of Japanese maples I would lose the view. Oh, well, I do at least have plenty of rocks and moss and some bamboo 😀
Happy Saturday Prop!

Not these geums. Full sun preferred. Water avens are a type of geum and I’d guess they like it damp and shady.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the scent of Pittosporum flowers, which is quite strong and not unpleasant. Blueberries are partly self fertile, they crop better if pollinated. Acid soil and not too dry. ‘Darrow’ is my best one, huge fruits; I rooted three cuttings, two of which have died. Been meaning to get ‘Totally Tangerine’ since it first came out, just hasn’t happened yet.

There is a real change in the plants coming out in the garden now as your six this week shows. Goodbye tulips – although like you I still have a few going strong, hello aquilegias, alliums and geums – I already had one Totally Tangerine and bought a couple more to join it this year (I moved it so it hasn’t had a chance to grow big like yours). I have chosen six views from the garden at Charleston farmhouse this week as it is a year since I started volunteering there. (Ok, slightly more than six – I may have cheated a little…)

I love your Aquilegia. A beaut. I reckon, like a few others, that you need a couple of blueberries for the full fruit. I have had two next to each other in pots and they always give a crop. That sounds boastful, but just trying to be helpful! No flowers in mine this week:

Haha! Totally Tangerine can be a bit of a thug – it grows like Topsy! I split my 2 year old plant a couple of weeks ago – into four big pieces and have been busy foisting them onto friends and family. I love the way if flowers all through the year but I agree with you – one or two is more than enough!
And the pittosporum flowers – I noticed them for the first time this spring – never knew they flowered.

Wow, yours are pretty cool this time around, except that weird Pittosporum flower. Their foliage is better than their bloom. The columbine is pretty rad, and I happen to prefer it in white instead of green. I just happened to feature geum recently.. It is uncommon for us. The alliums are uncommon too, and have grown none of them yet.
