The garden is continuing to emerge from hibernation. While it can be gloomy and variable weather-wise, I do like this time of year for the promise it holds. On a weekday evening, I have been known to inspect the estate for new growth by torchlight. This does often result in trampled snowdrops – whose idea was it to plant them in the lawn? time for Six on Saturday – Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower, bulb action, a job to do, a job completed, a pest, anything at all. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Verbena hastata ‘pink spires’. Just poking through, this new growth is the first sign of anything happening in these plants which were shipped to me whilst dormant back in November. They grow to about 1.2m, 4 feet so are good for middle to back of border. I bought these as I was getting fed up with cousin verbena bananarama never seeding about in my garden. In any case, I think the flowers on this will be more noteworthy. I have 10 of these (more you spend, more you save!), so need to start thinking about where I’m going to put them.
2 – Crocus, basic purple. I planted these back in late October, maybe November. All went in pots on the patio. My first ever crocus flower is on its way out. Totes emosh.
3 – Euphorbia amygdaloides ‘purpurea’. It’s a bit of a mess. I am sorely tempted to cut it right back. What is the right thing to do? Anyone?
4 – Narcissus ‘Decoy’. Just emerging, these are a new one for me this year. They are an unsual daff, with white petals and a red-orange trumpet. It’s a daffodil Jim, but not as we know it. They won’t flower till the back end of March, maybe even early April, so I have to be patient.
5 – Heuchera, unknown. In my wholesale binge back in the autumn, I bought 5 “mixed” heuchera. I hoped to get some of the more unusual colouring. This one looks like it will have lime coloured leaves.
6 – Snowman – involuntary rhinoplasty. His extreme weight-loss programme went too far.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to take part, just publish your post, pop a link in the comments below and if you also mention my blog in yours that would be fab. For more details and for other ways to participate, please read the brief guide.
I hope you get some gardening done, it looks like it will be pretty wet and windy here, at least today. Don’t forget to check back in as more links are added during the day.
I’ll be back next weekend with another #SixOnSaturday.
My Euphorbia purpurea is looking a state as well. It hasn’t been right since last winter, to be honest. I was blaming the snow last year, but maybe they are sulky in drought??
I love Verbena hastata – I only discovered it last year, but will be looking out for it to grow my own.

Brrrr! It’s well above freezing here, but windy. You can keep your snow, I have had quite enough of that this winter! (2 or 3 inches. Once).

I am glad you posted the narcissus and the crocuses up close and personal in the early stages, because now I will be able to identify what I have where!!!!! Fall bulb planting is new to me, can you imagine planting your first bulbs at 71? Why did I wait so long? Even the buds and tiny, tiny stems are beautiful! The snowman nose made my day! Thanks for a wonderful post as usual, and I learn so much from everyone! Here is my contribution this week….https://thecadyluckleedy.com/2019/02/09/six-on-saturday-now-where-were-we/

Your snowman could make a fortune with that weight loss plan!
If you cut the Euphorbia back now I don’t think you’ll have any flowers this year. I’d just cut out any really tatty looking shoots and last years dead stems, if you haven’t already.
The end of Storm Erik is still with us so not a lot of gardening going to happen here for a while.

Well, mine are rather a dull lot this week and to cap it all, I just went to check the new plants in the bathroom and when removing a dead leaf, all the rest from the main plant came away in my hand!!!!!! I think it’s a case of “Beam me up, Scotty” before I destroy this planet, or garden, completely!

I LOVE the remains of the snowman. What a hoot! And I look forward to seeing the crocus and narcissus in full flower. Did you plant saffron crocus? The heuchera might be the lovely lime one I’ve seen on sale here at our end. It would be a fabulous foil in any garden.
And I must google the verbena to see what it looks like.
I’m guessing your winter seems long and gloomy from your end but for watching on from down south, it seems to have flown and you’re right, this is the time where those little green spikes through the soil promise such hope.
