Six on Saturday 16-02-2019

It is still pretty chilly at night, about freezing, but during the day it has been getting to 12 or 13°c here and sunny with it. There’s a definite feeling of spring in the air and the plants seem to be responding almost visibly to the increased light levels. Despite the forecast implying similar weather for the next couple of weeks, I am wary of declaring winter over. February has a way of kicking you in the backside, and March has been known to harbour nasty weather surprises. Still, I plan to enjoy it while it lasts. Six on Saturday then – Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower, a tool, foliage, a pest, a success, anything at all. Join in!

Here are my Six for this week.

1 – These hellebore are new this year, and I’ve shown them here before when they were a bright white. They now have a definite pink tinge to them. I’m not sure whether they are ex-white flowers on their way out, or new flowers on their way to be being white. Time will tell.

2 – After something of a winter-enforced flower hiatus in my garden, it’s finally daffodil time. This is one of about 150 basic yellow daffs I put in the ground back in autumn 2017. I have added some more interesting narcissus this year but still, nothing wrong with a basic daff.

3 – Temporary greenhouse staging. I dismantled some more permanent staging last year to make room for tomato growing. I have a lot of seeds sown so will soon need every available horizontal space for pricked out seedlings. I plan to use this space to grow tomatoes again so needed something quick to serve on an interim basis. Two upturned tubs and a few planks are just the job. Most of these plants will go outside soon, they are all hardy, making room for new seedlings.

4 – Some time back I potted up several pieces of heuchera stem, remnants of an old ‘Palace Purple’ plant that seemed to have suffered some catastrophic event. Crown rot possibly, or maybe vine weevils. Anyhow, the little bits of stem are showing encouraging signs of new growth. Hopefully these will grow on well as spring gets going.

5 – Sedum ‘autumn joy’. I haven’t yet cut down last year’s stems, but the new growth is already evident. They always remind me of little cabbages.

6 – Crocus, yellow’un. That purple one from last week still hasn’t fully opened, despite the sunshine this week. Several of the yellow ones have, but no more than one per pot. Maybe the other bulbs ganged up one of their fellows. “you go outside, see how cold it is”. “no, YOU go outside”. “no, YOU go!”.
