It is still pretty chilly at night, about freezing, but during the day it has been getting to 12 or 13°c here and sunny with it. There’s a definite feeling of spring in the air and the plants seem to be responding almost visibly to the increased light levels. Despite the forecast implying similar weather for the next couple of weeks, I am wary of declaring winter over. February has a way of kicking you in the backside, and March has been known to harbour nasty weather surprises. Still, I plan to enjoy it while it lasts. Six on Saturday then – Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower, a tool, foliage, a pest, a success, anything at all. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – These hellebore are new this year, and I’ve shown them here before when they were a bright white. They now have a definite pink tinge to them. I’m not sure whether they are ex-white flowers on their way out, or new flowers on their way to be being white. Time will tell.
2 – After something of a winter-enforced flower hiatus in my garden, it’s finally daffodil time. This is one of about 150 basic yellow daffs I put in the ground back in autumn 2017. I have added some more interesting narcissus this year but still, nothing wrong with a basic daff.
3 – Temporary greenhouse staging. I dismantled some more permanent staging last year to make room for tomato growing. I have a lot of seeds sown so will soon need every available horizontal space for pricked out seedlings. I plan to use this space to grow tomatoes again so needed something quick to serve on an interim basis. Two upturned tubs and a few planks are just the job. Most of these plants will go outside soon, they are all hardy, making room for new seedlings.
4 – Some time back I potted up several pieces of heuchera stem, remnants of an old ‘Palace Purple’ plant that seemed to have suffered some catastrophic event. Crown rot possibly, or maybe vine weevils. Anyhow, the little bits of stem are showing encouraging signs of new growth. Hopefully these will grow on well as spring gets going.
5 – Sedum ‘autumn joy’. I haven’t yet cut down last year’s stems, but the new growth is already evident. They always remind me of little cabbages.
6 – Crocus, yellow’un. That purple one from last week still hasn’t fully opened, despite the sunshine this week. Several of the yellow ones have, but no more than one per pot. Maybe the other bulbs ganged up one of their fellows. “you go outside, see how cold it is”. “no, YOU go outside”. “no, YOU go!”.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to join in, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be super. For more details and other ways to participate, you have a quick read of the participation guide.
I am looking forward to a sunny weekend in the garden. Don’t forget to pop back during the day as more links get added.
I’ll be back next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
I’m late! I’m late! I’m late! But hey, it’s still Saturday here! I didn’t have anything earth shattering to post about until a daffodil opened up this morning. The first of many. https://stoneyknob.wordpress.com/2019/02/16/six-on-saturday-buds-and-blooms/

the hellebore really do have unusual flowers and the more i look at the gardens of my fellow SoS’s the more I have the urge to see if i can buy some here. Your staging looks so neat and your seed trays so organised.

I hope Cleo appreciates the view she has now! I wish I occasionally thought of taking before and after pictures. Our garden simply had a lot of very large shrubs for ease of management, I presume. It is more like a cottage garden now, I hope. Very good idea for an interesting Six! I especially like the wall just as I like my paths made from leftover bricks and patio blocks.

Cleo is truly a cupboard lover, so I don’t think there’s much appreciating going on, it’s all about the apples for her! I’m glad you like the wall, Granny.

I was too late to squeeze in a six this week, but will enjoy reading everyone else’s. Yours are a jolly sign of spring especially the ‘basic’ daff. Any daff is a good one, to me. Still hot here, 34 expected today and no rain. Sigh.

No 6 from me -it’s half term so lots of resting happening here! I’ll enjoy reading about everyone’s gardens though. Xx

I haven’t had time to read the other comments yet, so forgive me if I repeat, I think the hellebore are old flowers not young ones. Think so anyway. Love the bright crocus and daffs, warms the heart. My full-size daffodils disappeared during the winter, but my Tete-a-Tete are ready to bloom. I like them beter than the big ones anyway, they tuck nicely into tiny spaces!
Here’s my first go at “Six on Saturday.”

If your hellebores are like mine when they first bloom they are their true color and then mine all turn a soft lime green. My plants are trying to please me because that is my favorite color! I can’t wait for my daffs to bloom. They must be waiting and no one wants to be the first here. Today I have two posts because I could not help myself. https://thecadyluckleedy.com/2019/02/16/six-on-saturday-the-home-edition/ and

I quite agree with the sentiment that there’s nothing wrong with a basic daff so I planted a group of five wild daffs, what could go wrong, they grow wild in a meadow a mile from here. Two have made it above ground so far. What is wrong with them? Or me? https://wp.me/p6bCCa-1LY

Love the ‘cabbages’ photo, I shall think of said vegetable every time I look at my Sedum (which also need cutting down). I think we’re all being lulled into a false sense of winters end.

I know exactly what you mean, its so tempting to be lulled into a feeling that the winter is over on days like this. My favourite picture is the autumn joy, there is something particularly uplifting about seeing a plant with this name starting into growth in February. Here are mine for the week and I look forward to catching up with all the other sixes over the weekend.

“Your basic daffodil”, love it! Am I right in thinking that you are being more restrained in scratching the itch this year? Or is that an insult? Here’s mine: https://timhewittgardener.com/2019/02/16/six-on-a-saturday-16-2-19/

How very dare you! Restrained? Moi? I have sown about 40 pots of seeds, hardy perennials. I have not sown much veg, apart from tomatoes, chillies, onions and shallots. I have loads left to do…

Basic daffodil? You say it as if there ‘is’ something wrong with it. The old classic ‘King Alfred’ are still the best! That is why they are still so popular. It is not easy to improve on perfection.
The hellebores are rad! I grew them at the farm, and did not like doing so. They always looked so tired to me. However, the clients bought as many as they could get, and assured me that they really looked better once established in their landscapes.
I will be right back with my six.

Basic is often best! The redwood here have been around for centuries, and some have bee around for thousands of years, but none are in need of improvement.

Hellebore still looking good as it changes. Mine are chomped on too much, but still think I’ll put a few more in next year. Let them cross breed and self seed a variety of colours.
Divided some of my sedum last year. I’m starting to see it returning so hopefully have a few patches dotted about.

Not quite sure. I know small slugs do sometimes nest in the flower buds. But I haven’t seen anything on them. I don’t know if it’s just shredding with wind or birds. But I find they end up with little holes in the flowers while the leaves are healthy enough.
