I’m calling it. Spring is here early. (There, jinxed it for everyone.) It’s so nice out during the day, no good to me for the most of the week as I’m at work, but still, it is getting lighter at either end of the day and the garden is responding accordingly. Six On Saturday then. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower, foliage, a bug, a job to do, a success, a failure, anything at all. Join in!

Here are my Six for this week.

1 – Clematis ‘Rebecca’. This is my longest standing and best flowering clematis and it is quite woody in places now. I don’t cut it down lower than about a metre, I did this year’s prune a week or two ago. It is putting out new growth. It will quickly scramble up the trellis then flop over forward giving a good cascade of deep red flowers.

2 – Sycamore seedling. I have a big old sycamore over the back fence, it is usually free with its helicopter seed pods. I am not plagued by these this year. In the past there have been seedlings everywhere with hundreds growing in the lawn. I expect it’s somewhat a factor of wind direction around the time the seed pods drop. I’ll still be pulling these up for the next few weeks.

3 – Hosta ‘Whirlwind’. Among my autumn binge purchase from Parker’s Wholesale were 15 hosta bareroots. The first of those to awaken is unfurling gradually. No idea where I’m going to put them.

4 – Viburnum bodnatense ‘Dawn’. Bought last year as part of my attempts to extend the season of interest in my garden. I didn’t like the shape of the shrub so I pruned it, not realising that might affect the flowering this year since they flower on old growth. Weirdly then, I have flowers at the very tips of the branches.

5 – Narcissus ‘Jetfire’. These are new to me this year, planted last autumn. I think I have shown them before just as they were emerging from the ground. These have now developed flower buds so I don’t think it will be too long before they join the party.

6 – Aphid Terminator. I was dithering over what to include as my 6th photo when I spotted this on my quick tour of the garden at lunchtime today (Friday). It was basking in the beautiful February sunshine, making itself quite at home on the decaying foliage of some rudbeckia that I haven’t yet tidied up.
