Six on Saturday 02-03-2019

After a tiring week working in the US, it was lovely to come back to changes in the garden and the greenhouse. Things that were under the surface last weekend are emerging. Seeds that were seeds are now seedlings. More on those another time, but suffice to say I have a bit of pricking out to do. Six on Saturday then. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a tool, a disaster, an emerging plant, a flower, anything at all. Join in!

Here are my Six for this week.

1 – Thalictrum x ‘Black Stockings’. I grew these from seed last year and they finished up as quite small plants that didn’t do a great deal in 2018. This is not unexpected with seed grown perennials, they often take a year or two to hit their stride. I was pleased to see that they are out of the traps, raring to go. Just a tight bundle of growth right now, they will soon spring forth.

2 – Tulip kaufmanniana. Just the stripy leaves so far. If I recall right these are among the first to flower. It must have rained while I was away, each swirl of leaves has a little puddle of water at its base.

3 – Was it just a week ago that I featured these ‘jetfire’ narcissus? Time flies when you’re, um, flying, The petals are swept back aerodynamically and the trumpet (cone?) is a bright and darker yellow. They make a change from the basic yellow.

4 – Prunus kojo no mai. A recent addition to my garden, half price of course. I have it in a decent size pot on the patio. It is quite small, perhaps 60cm, but is covered in tiny buds like these. I am anticipating quite a show in the next few weeks.

5 – Aubrieta. Grown from seed a couple of years ago this blameless plant lolls about the place flowering from about now to goodness knows when. I probably should have more, I will take some cuttings later in the spring.

6 – Geranium, red leaves. I thought I’d lost these, by which I mean misplaced rather than deceased. I grew them from seed last year, again they didn’t do much, but I did manage to keep the alive over the summer. I recently took a closer look at some pots of compost lurking under the trampoline. Sure enough, there they were. Growth is emerging with vigour so they should be quite nice plants this year, I just have to figure out where to put them.
