Scorchio! In a rare and unusual occurrence of historical significance, it will actually be beautiful weather this bank holiday weekend, at least round these parts. I have spent a few days in the garden, some welcome time off work, or not-gardening as I now call it. Some time was spent in the hammock, very nice although I find it inevitably results in pins and needles in my feet – my considerable bulk causes a certain amount of hammock sagging, causing my legs to be somewhat akimbo. I managed to extract myself for long enough to take photos for this weeks edition of Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a tulip, a tulip, a tulip or a tulip. Tulips also work well. Any tulip at all! Join in…
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Sempervivum box. Back in January I mentioned that I had bought some slightly past-it semps at half price. I had a wooden box tray handy so I planted it with my bargain semps. It has filled out quite nicely. And there is more colour too. It has been in the same spot on the patio steps since planting and seems quite happy to have been out all winter.

2 – Wallflower, ‘Fire King’. A survivor from an iffy batch. The plants are not especially good but I’m happy enough with the flowers. I might be persuaded to get some more for next spring.
3 – Narcissus ‘Pipit’. As in life, so in daffodils, it’s often worth checking out the backside! These are fading to a pale cream as advertised but that effect is more marked in the reverse.
4 – Tulips, fully opened. Not sure of the variety, these have sprung up in a planter where I don’t recall planting any. They are enormous when opened out like this, easily the size of my palm.
5 – Tulip ‘Pittsburgh’. I was minded to ration the tulips over a few weeks but I’m afraid they may not last, so let us enjoy them while we can. Pittsburgh here is a keeper, I will definitely get more next year. I might even try to dry and store some by way of an experiment.
6 – Tulip ‘Apricot Delight’. Pretty enough, but ‘Apricot Surprise’ would be a better name since there is not a hint of apricot that I can discern.
Those are mine, what are yours? If you’d like to join in just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be fab. For more details you can refer to the brief guide.
Have a super weekend in the garden, don’t forget to check back in as more links are added during the day.
I’ll be back next weekend with another #SixOnSaturday.
Love your tulips. I’m impressed that you keep track of names. I inherited my one and only tulip. It happily multiplied until this spring when something munched most of them. At the moment the azaleas are putting on a show in my yard: https://stoneyknob.wordpress.com/2019/04/20/six-on-saturday-a-is-for-azalea/

Your sempervivum box is lovely. There were quite in my yard when I moved in. I was surprised they were cold hardy, the ones I grew up with liked warm weather.
I am obsessed with my herbs this month. Watching them come back when I was sure they were dead! I do it every year!

I also like the look of ‘Pipit’. I shall have to get hold of some for the autumn.
Happy Easter!

The image of you legs akimbo in the hammock will stay with me for a while 🙂 . Loving the tulips of course, but the semperviren tray is wonderful. Must have missed that when you first made it. The wallflower is a great colour, love those deep dark ones. Here are mine, hope you enjoy them. Happy Easter Prop! https://offtheedgegardening.com/2019/04/20/six-on-saturday-bunnies/

Love the wallflower fire king. Added to my list, and the narcissi which are late flowering so go well with the tulips. I’ve got the same problem with my tulips. I keep looking at them. Still loving tulips, though I fear most of mine will be gone by May and this rather warm weather will finish them off after the windy weather at the beginning of the week. Oh, well, I am enjoying their wonderful colour in the garden. I don’t know how tulip breeders define the colour apricot, but most of the ‘apricot’ tulips are not what I consider to be that colour. I have ‘Apricot Foxx’ for you today – now this one IS more of an apricot colouring. https://wp.me/p79zFr-1RM
Enjoy your hammock Jon! I have pins and needles in my leg all the time, this damn sciatica just will not shift!

I’m amazed how much your bargain semps have changed. You would hardly recognise they are the same plants. Perhaps T. ‘Apricot Delight’ is planning a similar transformation.

Misty here today, looks like the warm weather won’t get so far northwest. Not to worry, I’m in the shop today, and tomorrow may be a rare polytunnel day. I haven’t sown a seed in weeks, and my apricot needs training (I think I have got a couple of fruitlets!). The colour is coming nicely on the sempervivums. I’ve got a pot of lots of tiny ones to split for my new wall, hopefully sunny and dry enough for them, although I hadn’t thought about vine weevil….

Perhaps the evil weevil hasnt got as far up as Skye. A day in the polytunnel sounds fab.

Fabulous weather up here too and will be making the most of it. I tried growing sempervivums in a tray like that and putting mesh wire over the tops to hold the plants and soil in then hung it on a wall. It almost sort of worked! Here are my six…

Oh wow that’s a good idea, might give that a try! Youd maybe need some of that grid stuff that holds gravel or soil on a slope.

Just using fine mesh works. You cut holes with pliers and plant through it then the roots should take hold after a few months and you can hang it up.

Now “apricot” is derived from the Latin “praecox” which means very early. So your tulips may be a delightful early variety. Apricots also fruit earlier than some other trees. Personally I prefer your var.unk tulips. I just took my new phone for an outing today. https://rivendellgarden.blog/?p=4253 Now off to eat a ton of dried apricots with James Acaster. Well, actually, to restock on booze for Easter.

Your tulips rival the ones you had last year. I’ve a spare box kicking around, so now you’ve given me an idea for it, as I wanted to break into the succulent ranks. They do look so good the way you’ve done them. I’ve also had great hammock thoughts this week, but haven’t gotten to it yet. Maybe this weekend. I won’t have leg tingles, but will certainly have to share w/a few of the hairy critturs that live here. https://lorahughes.blogspot.com/2019/04/green-grows.html

Those are pretty sweet tulips. ‘Apricot Delight’ looks like something else, but I can’t place it. I like ‘Pittsburgh’ because of the name. (I have been wanting to find the ‘San Jose’ bearded iris for years.) ‘Fire King’ wallflower is pretty wild. We got our first ‘fancy’ cultivars of wallflower just last year. They are working out nice, but are nothing like the wallflowers I grew up with.

That’s an impressive transformation in your Sempervivum box. We seem to have lots in small pots and I’m sure they’d be happier in a bigger container. I think I may scale back tulips next season in favour of other spring bulbs, but then again, they’re a bit later and a real splash of colour. (Should I make a note of Pittsburgh?) I certainly won’t bother trying to keep them for a second season. here’s my six: https://wp.me/p6bCCa-1Or
