Six on Saturday 08-06-2019

Well it has been raining here, and there is more to come over the next week or so.  It does cramp my style somewhat, restricted as I am to weekend gardening, but I am pleased to see it. The garden will get a better soaking than I can give it and the whole thing will get a nice boost.  I’ll just have to watch out for our slimy friends, they will be having a field day.  Time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – flowers, foliage, pests, diseases, a success, a failure, anything at all. Easy peasy, join in!

Here are my Six for this week.

1 – Persicaria ‘Purple Fantasy’.  I bought it cheap last year as it was looking a little bedraggled but had good roots. It is fast becoming a substantial plant. I bought it for the foliage, the flowers are pretty anonymous, very small and bland.  Naturally, I have taken cuttings, a couple of which found their way into grannysgarden’s boot last time they were here. Likey.

2 – Allium christophii.  Many of the standard purple ones are done already, but these are still on their way in.  They are a little lower growing than the common ones, with a bigger, lighter coloured flower head. I like the way the dome shape is merely suggested by the alignment of the petals. I shall be getting some more (along with more alliums in general) in the autumn.

3 – Lupin, rain drops. I predict a few photos of these today, it has been raining a lot recently and it does look so cool on the lupin leaves.  It reminds me of the liquid mercury we were given to play with in science lessons. What were they thinking!

4 – Rose ‘The Pilgrim’. One of a few I bought last year to go in containers in the side passage. It has grown on vigorously, I should be able to train into a good climbing shape in the dormant season.  I thought it was yellower than it is, it’s quite pale. I don’t mind that really.  I am finding the tightly furled petals fascinating. It has a fairly strong fragrance too.

5 – Pyrocantha flowers. This firethorn was a bit sickly earlier in the year but regular watering has seen it recover nicely.  Last year it was still a small plant and had just a few flowers low down. This year it is about 4′ tall, trained against the wall, and has flowers top to bottom. This will translate into berries later in the year, so it should be quite a good display.

6 – Aquilegia, self sown.  Or at least, I think it is self sown. I have grown quite a few from seed, but don’t bother labelling them too carefully. Who knows…
