I had expected to be home in time to sort out my SoS pictures yesterday but it ended up being a long journey back from Scotland, dark and raining on our return. Fortunately I have a backup plan, my pictures this week were taken at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. The long herbaceous border was a little past its best but there were still some gems.

3. Hydrangea mac. ‘Lilacina’.
4. Imperata cylindrical rubra ‘red baron’
5. Gentiana paradoxa
6. Rudbeckia goldsturm, en masse.

The Propagator 
Some great plants this week. I especially like the Gentiana. I was interested to see that you have a Monarda blooming now. That is very much a late spring flower for me.

My dad was a gardener, and every time we went to the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh we had to spend ages at the herbaceous border. As a child I was more interested in the rock garden and greenhouses, but now I think my interests might have changed a bit! If we make it to Europe next year, hopefully I can go to the gardens. Six lovelies! I have that Imperata cylindrical grass but mine is a tiny one and I believe it takes a while to get established. I hope it does as your photo shows! I was at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh during September, three years ago and really enjoyed the grounds. Didn’t manage to go inside those magnificent glasshouses though as not enough time. But impressed that it was free to enter the rest of the gardens.

Welcome home. I love the flowers of Monarda but my growing experience of it involves a lot of mildew sadly. I wish ‘Red Baron’ was a little bit hardier. Here’s my very soggy six for this week

Here are mine for this week.
Is it against the rules to use pictures from two weeks ago? I have done that before. I also have used pictures from other places, even some from 400 miles away.
Anyway, is monardia popular everywhere? It is popular here because of the climate. I was surprised to see how popular it is in the Pacific Northwest. It is nice to see it there too.

I love the photo of the ‘red baron’. You can’t beat a bit of foliage sometimes. Alas, I never have any luck with Monarda – it never survives, which is a pity as the bees love it.
