I had expected to be home in time to sort out my SoS pictures yesterday but it ended up being a long journey back from Scotland, dark and raining on our return. Fortunately I have a backup plan, my pictures this week were taken at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. The long herbaceous border was a little past its best but there were still some gems.
1. Monarda
2. Inula Hookeri
3. Hydrangea mac. ‘Lilacina’.
4. Imperata cylindrical rubra ‘red baron’
5. Gentiana paradoxa
6. Rudbeckia goldsturm, en masse.
That’s me for this week, normal service resumed next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
Some great plants this week. I especially like the Gentiana. I was interested to see that you have a Monarda blooming now. That is very much a late spring flower for me.

A late effort from me also returning from holiday. Today the unpacking and sorting house then might get some time later to check over the garden fully.

My dad was a gardener, and every time we went to the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh we had to spend ages at the herbaceous border. As a child I was more interested in the rock garden and greenhouses, but now I think my interests might have changed a bit! If we make it to Europe next year, hopefully I can go to the gardens. They are just so much a part of my childhood! https://basia329.wordpress.com/2019/08/17/six-on-saturday-17-08-19/

Yes I tend to gravitate to the herbaceous borders at a garden.

Hope you had a good holiday. I was in Edinburgh earlier this year and I saw the Botanical Gardens from the bus on the way to Leith but didn’t have time to stop by. Next time! Those Hydrangeas look like butterflies. Here’s my six https://greengirlgardener.com/2019/08/17/six-of-saturday-17th-august/

Two weeks away from your garden? Gosh, I couldn’t do that… 😉 That imperata is definitely the star of your six today. My dahlias are here https://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com/2019/08/17/six-on-saturday-late-summer-stalwarts/

A great selection this week! The monarda is a special plant, I was admiring swathes of them at Trentham Gardens only last week. Here are my six https://blogoftwogardens.com/2019/08/17/six-on-saturday-3/

Well done for keeping this going Prop, you are a marvel (and I’m not being sarky!) We are off to Edinburgh next weekend (excuse logged) but not sure we will get to the gardens, hope so. Love the gentians, they are something I have always wanted to grow, one day …… Anyway, welcome home and here are my somewhat muted six https://offtheedgegardening.com/2019/08/17/six-on-saturday-anarchy/

Six lovelies! I have that Imperata cylindrical grass but mine is a tiny one and I believe it takes a while to get established. I hope it does as your photo shows! I was at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh during September, three years ago and really enjoyed the grounds. Didn’t manage to go inside those magnificent glasshouses though as not enough time. But impressed that it was free to enter the rest of the gardens.
Welcome home! Hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing break.

Love the petals on that inula hookeri & that hydrangea is lovely. Like the way you framed Red Baron, too. Glad to hear you’re home, tho the trip back doesn’t sound like much fun. Are you back at work on Monday? Hope not. https://lorahughes.blogspot.com/2019/08/from-last-week-comes-this.html

Welcome home. I love the flowers of Monarda but my growing experience of it involves a lot of mildew sadly. I wish ‘Red Baron’ was a little bit hardier. Here’s my very soggy six for this week

The photos show that the sun made an appearance at least once then. Hope your own garden doesn’t look too battered, it wont have suffered from lack of watering. And back to work as the weather improves I guess. No wonder people go to Benidorm, returning to work doesn’t seem so bad then. https://wp.me/p6bCCa-1XF

Yes in the reverse of the ratio one would prefer, it was shitty except for one or two days where the sun poked through. Shame.

I keep seeing lovely Rudbeckia flowers on SoS. It seems like the kind of plant I could grow here. Here is my six: http://janesmudgeegarden.com/ill-light-the-fire-sos-august-17-2019/

Hope you get a chance to recover from the journey before going back to work. How is the garden looking on your return? The unsettled weather seems to be continuing for a while yet. Here are this weeks six, including a first confirmed sighting of Autumn…

Here are mine for this week.
Is it against the rules to use pictures from two weeks ago? I have done that before. I also have used pictures from other places, even some from 400 miles away.
Anyway, is monardia popular everywhere? It is popular here because of the climate. I was surprised to see how popular it is in the Pacific Northwest. It is nice to see it there too.

I love the photo of the ‘red baron’. You can’t beat a bit of foliage sometimes. Alas, I never have any luck with Monarda – it never survives, which is a pity as the bees love it. I hope you’ve recovered from your travels https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2019/08/17/six-on-saturday-feeling-hot-hot-hot-17-august-2019/
