Still no frost here, and no sign of it for the next two weeks. That’s all very well, but I want to tidy up a bit. It seems overly destructive to cut things back when they’re doing well still. I will just have to wait. While we are waiting, it’s time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower, a critter, a job to do, a work in progress, foliage, anything at all. Join in!
Here are mine for this week…
1 – Sweet peas, germinating. Remember these from a couple of weeks ago? I sowed them 2 per root trainer module. No seed for soaking or other funny business, they just need watering once sown. They are in the greenhouse, just on unheated staging. I plan to leave them there until March when I will plant them out. I am hoping for a big improvement on this year’s efforts which were indifferent at best.
2 – Bulbageddon. This is a big box, and like all the best treats, this has another layer underneath. I think I have about 1000 to plant. I made a pathetic start last week, 25 daffodils went in the ground. Just 975 to go. Sobs. I am hoping the 400 crocus won’t be too bad, I will use my drill to make holes then drop one in each hole. It was quite quick last year, but I only had 200 then. The daffodils will be a different matter, I will have to dig those in properly, about 250 of them. The rest are tulips, I might wait till it cools down a bit in November. I have the week off next week so plan to make a good dent in this pile. Buyer’s remorse is a thing, but I console myself with thoughts of abundant colour in the first half of next year.
3 – Geranium leaf colour. This is either ‘Rosanne’ or ‘Orion’, I forgot to check. Just one leaf has turned, the rest are still resolutely verdant. Assuming the rest also turn, it is the gift that keeps on giving.
4 – Amelanchier leaf. I bought this tree to give interest in three seasons. This is my first autumn with it, and so far it is not disappointing. I can imagine once it fills out a bit it will quite a sight.
5 – Canna. As we have remained frost-free so far, the daintier plants are still very much alive and well, including this canna. This leaf hasn’t quite unfurled yet, forming a tube, a veritable waterslide.
6 – Nerine. I wondered where these had got to. This one is in borrowed territory, on the pavement side of my front garden wall. It is leaning rather dramatically, desperately seeking sunshine. It is out of luck there, I can’t remember the last time I saw blue sky here! I have a dozen or so of these dotted about, but this is the only one I’ve found flowering so far.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to have go, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours, that would be super. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a productive weekend in the garden, don’t forget to check back in later as more links are added during the day.
I’ll be back next weekend with another #SixOnSaturday.
Less done than expected here this week due to storms with torrential rain and an angry mistral. Still warm though, it’s weird having winds of 80 – 100 mph and it being 23°c. But for all the rain we had over three days, the ground is now fairly dry again, might get some of my #bulbageddon into the ground next week, I haven’t bought in numbers, I’ve bought in kilos and so far have 30 kilos of assorted bulbs to go in! No idea how many there are but I know they’ll have to be split from the sacks they’re in and put into small bags for me to move, of course you are clearly the one to blame as I hadn’t bought a single one until you mentioned your crazy purchases 🥴
Here’s my contribution this week, hope you have a good week, and apologies for the late addition, I posted it to my site in the small hours but then fell asleep before I got round to posting here.

I’m in trouble with my bulbs. Still in boxes and bags in the potting shed. The garden is a pond! I’m going to have to put them all in pots. Sigh. Here’s my six this week https://bramblegarden.com/2019/10/26/six-on-saturday-26-october-2019/

Yup, I didn’t get any done today either. Nice tomorrow, allegedly..my soil drains pretty well so I’m hoping I’ll be ok…

I can just hear running water in my garden. The field is draining into the usually dry ditches. It’s a nightmare. Wishing I hadn’t bought as many daffodils now…

Oh well. They can wait. Won’t matter if you plant them late.

Inspired by your propagation, I saved my own sweetpea seed last season and grew them on. Sad that what were multi-coloured plants have reverted to just blue as they grow up the fence of my veggie garden. The whites however, look promising. With your inspiration I shall save their seed this year and see what happens! Here’s mine for this week: http://pruebatten.com/2019/10/26/sos-271019/ Cheers.

Some lovely autumn colour going on. I normally miss out on autumn leaves as get blown off before they change but actually got some orange and yellow this year.
A bit late this week but looking at tulip purchases.

1000 bulbs and I’m fretting over getting 20 or so garlic cloves in the ground before it freezes. 🙂

I’m one of the smug ones 😛 who has managed to get all the bulbs planted! And my neck and shoulder are paying the price of all the lifting of containers! I am sure you will have the most dramatic display in spring and I shall be looking at your photos green with envy. The problem I have with planting bulbs in the garden is that I then decide I want to plant a perennial and can’t remember where or if I have an empty space!
Nasty old day today so I have plenty of time to check out all our fellow sixers and drool over the southern hemisphere blogs 🙂

Here’s my gardening six for the week https://wp.me/p97pee-sx I sense that you are more relaxed than me about the weather. I don’t think we’ll see a frost this week but I’m fleecing the evergreen aggies anyway! What a pile of bulbs you have to get through. I’ll be doing a few more of mine next week. As you say – think of next year!

Hello! I’ve returned to the Six on Saturday fold. Well done with your sweet peas, I don’t have a greenhouse so usually do a February sowing and fill the windowsills. We are going to have a big bulb planting session on the gardens around the flats. Everyone has bought bulbs, it’s not been controlled well and I need to check what we have, but it will look splendid in the spring. I think we are planning to start tomorrow. It been raining here most of the week, so I’m stuck indoors looking forlornly out of the window (just like the Verbena bonsariensis in my post). It’s meant that I’ve been able to get on and write my blog a lot earlier in the day though, as I sensibly managed to get out and take some photos yesterday morning, before the rain really started hammering down.
That’s an amazing picture of the Canna!
Best of luck with the bulb planting, I’ve got a few hundred still to plant too.

What a great photo of that canna leaf. There’s nothing about cannas (at least above ground) that isn’t interesting. That is some colour in your geranium there. Really like that shade, & in that shape, it’s perfect. Hopefully if they all fill out that way, you’ll give us another photo. Have fun next wk w/your bulbageddon! https://lorahughes.blogspot.com/2019/10/oddum-jobs-bits-bobs.html

The problem with not cutting back the perennials is that it makes planning and planting the bulbs so much harder but like you I can’t bring myself to take my secateurs to plants still putting on a bit of a show. So there’s an excuse for the large box of unplanted bulbs – you’re welcome!
Likewise I have loads of bulbs for the woodland area but am still planning the plants to drift them through. This week I made some progress on this though – a visit to Fibrex Nursery to buy some ferns…

A thousand bulbs sounds like a lot but then once you get planting you start to think, mmm maybe a handful more. I have found myself picking up a pack or two in the bargain bins as late as February. Our amelanchiers looked splendid last week and then whoosh the leaves went almost overnight. The first frosts are definitely with us. It is very cold indeed this morning. As my children would say when they were little ‘there are no degrees today!’

Mine aren’t very horticulturally oriented this week. The fire season weather has been more of a concern than gardening weather.
Anyway, why don’t you soak your sweet peas before planting? Most people believe that is necessary. I get chastised if I say otherwise. I try to explain that once the seed is soaked, it must be planted, and what doesn’t get planted gets wasted. It doesn’t seem to matter. People are just going to soak their seeds before planting.
Is amelenchier the common name for that? That is not easy to pronounce or spell. I just know them as saskatoons or serviceberries.

Sweet peas do not need soaking, they’re all wrong! Unnecessary faff. Amelanchier is the botanical name.
