Still no frost here, and no sign of it for the next two weeks. That’s all very well, but I want to tidy up a bit. It seems overly destructive to cut things back when they’re doing well still. I will just have to wait. While we are waiting, it’s time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower, a critter, a job to do, a work in progress, foliage, anything at all. Join in!

Here are mine for this week…

1 – Sweet peas, germinating. Remember these from a couple of weeks ago? I sowed them 2 per root trainer module. No seed for soaking or other funny business, they just need watering once sown. They are in the greenhouse, just on unheated staging. I plan to leave them there until March when I will plant them out. I am hoping for a big improvement on this year’s efforts which were indifferent at best.

2 – Bulbageddon. This is a big box, and like all the best treats, this has another layer underneath. I think I have about 1000 to plant. I made a pathetic start last week, 25 daffodils went in the ground. Just 975 to go. Sobs. I am hoping the 400 crocus won’t be too bad, I will use my drill to make holes then drop one in each hole. It was quite quick last year, but I only had 200 then. The daffodils will be a different matter, I will have to dig those in properly, about 250 of them. The rest are tulips, I might wait till it cools down a bit in November. I have the week off next week so plan to make a good dent in this pile. Buyer’s remorse is a thing, but I console myself with thoughts of abundant colour in the first half of next year.

3 – Geranium leaf colour. This is either ‘Rosanne’ or ‘Orion’, I forgot to check. Just one leaf has turned, the rest are still resolutely verdant. Assuming the rest also turn, it is the gift that keeps on giving.

4 – Amelanchier leaf. I bought this tree to give interest in three seasons. This is my first autumn with it, and so far it is not disappointing. I can imagine once it fills out a bit it will quite a sight.

5 – Canna. As we have remained frost-free so far, the daintier plants are still very much alive and well, including this canna. This leaf hasn’t quite unfurled yet, forming a tube, a veritable waterslide.

6 – Nerine. I wondered where these had got to. This one is in borrowed territory, on the pavement side of my front garden wall. It is leaning rather dramatically, desperately seeking sunshine. It is out of luck there, I can’t remember the last time I saw blue sky here! I have a dozen or so of these dotted about, but this is the only one I’ve found flowering so far.
