August then, the last month of summer, although September often does a decent impression. Earlier in the week Mrs P and I went to Waterperry Gardens near Oxford, our second visit there. They have a splendid, long herbaceous border and others too, plus the nursery beds, all of which are a blaze of colour. I shall be brief this week as I’m on holiday, my Six this week are from Waterperry.
1 – Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’. En masse, a real eyeful. If they’d had any in the shop I would have bought one.

2 – Anthemis ‘EC Buxton’. See above!

3 – Dahlia ‘Bantling’. I’m going to look out for this one when it comes time to buys dahlia tubers. The pom poms are very tight, quite small but plentiful. The plant is short, knee high, maybe a little taller. Good for a patio pot, I’d say.

4 – Crocosmia. Probably lucifer, but possibly something else, I forgot to clock the label.

5 – Rose ‘Tequila Sunrise’. My eyes! My eyes!

6 – Eryngium. Almost the first thing we saw, loads of big clumps of this unlabeled eryngium. I was taken by the whiteness of the petally thangs.

Those are my Six for this week, short and sweet, what are yours? Join in!
I could do another couple of months of SoS posts with the photos I took at Waterperry, but ‘ll be back in my own garden next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
Gorgeous bright colours! Here is mine for today https://mybeautfulthings.com/2020/08/01/six-on-saturday-colour-and-produce-2/

I would like to pay a repeat visit to Waterperry too – it’s about an hour from us. I remember it for introducing me to both Sedum Jose Aubergine and to the concept of a peace pole. Lucky you, Waterperry is just the sort of tonic we need in these trying times. A lovely August Six. I don’t think that is .C.Lucifer as he is much redder. I ca’t imagine why I don’t grow lovely helenium.

Maybe but they like wet feet normally, mine struggle if I let the dry out. One can have too much of a good thing, of course.

That Dahlia is particularly lovely. It reminds me of the artificial flowers my mother-in-law sometimes makes out of tightly coiled ribbons of paper.

Love the Anthemis, why haven’t I grown it here? ‘Moorheim Beauty’ sadly doesn’t last for me, although other Heleniums do. Very annoying. I did a willow weaving workshop at Waterperry many years ago on a very damp autumn day but the Michaelmas Daisies were absolutely stunning.

We went to Waterperry years ago when the Asters were flowering in early autumn, lovely place. You can’t beat mass plantings of flowery things but they don’t scale down to normal garden size very readily. I have a carpet of seedlings of that Eryngium, but none flowering. Does your family hit the shops while you’re busy replying to everyone on here? (Hi, family, thanks for your forbearance) https://wp.me/p6bCCa-2ou

Yes peak aster is worth a special trip, I gather. We’ve seen post aster and now pre aster so will try to hit the mark later. My family is now old enough (21,19,17 and 12) that they mostly couldn’t give a fig what I’m up to!

Enjoy the holiday! I’ve heard of Waterperry many, many times but have never visited – one for the list for a future trip across the Irish Sea. Of course, we have had no crossing the sea this season, unfortunately, and we enjoy the English gardens so very much.
I am of an older school and have always considered the 1st of August as the beginning of autumn!

Waterperry was my late Father’s favourite garden. We visited for my 40th birthday and he bought me a ‘Moerheim Beauty’. It only survived 2 seasons but the memories remain. So lovely to see your perfect 6 from Waterperry.

My six are more brief than yours. The guidelines actually suggest brevity.
‘Lucifer’ is baffling. The naturalized types that blooms orange is often described as such. I believe that the real ‘Lucifer’ is red rather than orange. I think that it is shorter too.

Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’ is one of those plants you can’t ignore – it is truly a beauty. I have one plant, larger this year that I’ll divide and hope for more flowers next year, but who could hope to produce a display like that.
I love all the warm colours you have this week, the Anthemis, Dahlia, Crocosmia and that fab rose, followed by the cool of the Eryngium – it all adds up to a wonderful post. Glad you had a good day out with Mrs P.

If you divide it in the spring to the smallest plantlets you’ll get 15-20 plants out of that one. Did the same with my h. sahins early flowerer. If you pot them up to grow on a bit first they’ll be fab.

I’d have been happy to get just two or three. 😀 I’ll give it a go though – fingers crossed for success.
