We had rain! It has been some weeks and the garden was beginning to dry out, cracks in the lawn, that kind of thing. It rained persistently and heavily for a good few hours mid-week, most welcome. As I sit here in the office typing, there is a green glow in the room, as the daylight is filtered through a veritable forest of tomato plants that are temporarily resident on the window sill. They are a good two feet tall and looking hale and hearty. It won’t be long before I need to move them to the greenhouse and pot them on to their final 20L tubs. Time for Six on Saturday then – Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide!

Here are my Six for this week.

1 – Allium, probably ‘Purple Sensation’. This is the harbinger, bang on time, of May’s influx of allium flowers. It is still a teeny bud, this was taken at quite high zoom factor. I add more alliums every year, but I have come to really detest the foliage – such a mess! One can’t have everything, I suppose.

2 – Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’. The soup du jour a few years ago, it still fills shelf upon shelf in the big garden centres, and with some justification. I have several, the result of divisions, they have all just started to flower and will do so for months with some timely deadheading.

3 – Clematis montana ‘Warwickshire Rose’. It pays to look up from time to time. This montana has been flowering for a while, I think, unnoticed by me until now. Much of the flowering is happening at 10′ or so, where the sun gets to it. The rest will flower too, I think, just later.

4 – Abutilon x ‘Suntense’. This is very exciting. I grew this plant from seed that was sown in January 2018. I planted it out in 2019, I think. Aside from growing a bit (now 5′ tall), it has never flowered. I did read or hear a while back that it can take a few years to get going. Apparently so! On a tour of the estate this morning I noticed something different. Were they new leaves? No, definitely flower buds! There aren’t very many, but this is an excellent sign. I’ll enjoy this year’s offering and look forward to next year when it should be covered.

5 – Tulip ‘Hermitage’. I had this one last year too, and appreciating the deep orange, I bought some more. Supposedly it is quite reliably perennial so I should plant them out in the garden once they’re done. Should. I may not bother, it’s usually a very busy period in the garden.

6 – Poppy. It’ll either be ‘Lauren’s Grape’ or ‘Candy Floss’, I sowed some of each. In a few short weeks it’ll be 3 or 4 feet tall and flowering away. this is one of the few that has grown in a convenient place, many others have sprung up right next to other plants, I’ll need to move them. They won’t mind while small, I take a trowel full of soil with them.

Those are my Six for this week, what are yours? If you’d like to have a go, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be splendid. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.

I trust you will all have a productive gardening weekend, don’t forget to pop back as links get added during the day.

Stay safe, I’ll be back next weekend with another #SixOnSaturday.
