The weather forecast doesn’t look very encouraging, at least for today. High winds and heavy rain for most of the day. I have a few things to be doing undercover, fortunately, so I should be OK, and Sunday looks quite nice. In fact, I think we’ve seen the back of frost here until the autumn. I’m going to move my tomatoes out of the house and into their final positions this weekend. This will require a significant juggling act in the greenhouse as there is zero chance of them fitting in there at the moment. In the meantime, let’s do the Six on Saturday thing. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Clematis ‘The President’, soon to flower. This one is growing in a planter down the side alley, scrambling through roses ‘The Pilgrim’ and ‘Dr Eckener’. In its third year, it’s doing well and I am expecting lots of flowers. In fact, I’m expecting a lot of flowers full stop from that grouping, I think the roses are going to be fab too. I took a couple of cuttings of this last year, one of which I just planted out elsewhere in the garden. I’ll be taking more cuttings of clematis this year, because who doesn’t need more clematis?

2 – Begonia ‘Glowing Embers’ plus bonus morning glory seedling. I bought this and two others like it last year to go in planters on the patio. They did very well, flowering profusely all summer. They were turfed out when it came time to plant up with tulips and daffodils. I almost binned them but decided to try to overwinter them. I didn’t do anything fancy, just potted them up and stuck them on a shelf in the greenhouse. Two out of three are busy putting out new growth. Of the third there is no sign yet but the other two were in the heated bench so perhaps had a head start. The morning glory seedling is what you get when you grow morning glory in the same planter. I should pot it up properly really.

3 – Tulip ‘Ballerina’ and ‘Elegant Lady’. I think ‘Ballerina’ is about to go over, but it has lasted very well given the wind and rain we have had recently. The ‘Elegant Lady’ have just come out, so I’m pleased they managed to overlap if only for a few days.

4 – Narcissus ‘Pheasant Eye’. The last of my daffs to emerge this year. Only one of the flowers is out, the rest will be with us in a matter of days, I think.

5 – Tulips ‘Slawa’, ‘Pretty Princess’ and ‘Mistress Mystic’. Sticking with the bulbs, this combo hasn’t worked as well as I’d hoped. ‘Slawa’ was out well before the others and they are all different heights. I might replace ‘Slawa’ with a white tulip next time.

6 – Carrot seedlings. My pointy orange nemesis, I’m coming back for more punishment this year. Last year I did at least have a handful that looked vaguely like a carrot, so I am ever hopeful. I’ve sowed direct, they took ages to germinate, probably due the unseasonable cold in April. I need to thin them out a bit

Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to have a go, just publish your post and pop the link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be spiffing. For more details you can read the participant guide here.
Have a fabulous weekend, I hope you get lots of gardening done in spite. Don’t forget to check in later on as links get added throughout the day.
Stay safe, I’ll be back next weekend with another #SixOnSaturday.
Your tulips are stunning! I really need to put a bit more thought into the planning next year. I had two different types this year and my timings were very iffy! Must try harder next year!

I am not a fan of begonia for bedding at all but I have seen Glowing Embers and they are so striking I can see myself giving them a try eventually! You are clearly seen as an expert on propagating clematis as I was going to ask for more details too but will dutifully go and search for the post you mentioned… My six are here but you might need to have a hankie ready…

Ah! I’m glad I’m not the only one who isn’t a great carrot grower! I don’t try anymore. Is Pheasant’s Eye the same as Original Poet’s? Mine only had 4 flowers this year, out of 10 bulbs (5 from last year, 5 new).

The trees are leaving out very nicely, that tender vivid green of spring. Good rain, and I’m moving plants out of house and greenhouse for the summer. Canopy closing over the woodland garden, and the neighbors’ houses have disappeared.

My weather station is on the house roof so at this time of year it is often a little warmer at ground level. Now, 5:34 p.m. EDT it is 55.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Predicted low will be 41 degrees Fahrenheit at 6:00 a.m. EDT tomorrow morning.
Really tender plants such as red spot bananas and rex begonias can wait for better conditions.

Nice tulip choices! I tried Slawa in a pot last year, but only one has come back and flowered. Ballerina on the other hand is always a star. I also tried over-wintering Glowing Embers begonias this year and this week I spotted tiny, tiny leaves starting. So you are way ahead of me in return growth there. Nice to get them to come back though isn’t it?

Those first tulips are the stars of the show — the combo is gorgeous. But I do like the pheasant’s eye as well — v dramatic — and the pretty princess is lovely!
I think I have to do something about the amount of time I’m spending “gardening” — I suspect most of it is spent admiring other people’s Six on Saturday and a bit of weeding and watering. Not much will come of that approach! Better get pruning and planting…

Ballerina is my favourite tulip, so elegant and such a lovely colour. She copes well with the wind and I have some success of her returning each year. I am however, going to try some pink and purples next year – Pretty Princess is one, with Purple Lady and I will try Slawa too, but I might keep them in separate pots rather than combinations. This year my combo flowered at different times and different heights and all gone now! I have only a single Poeticus Narcissus flower that appeared this week, hope the rest buck their ideas up, but I suspect today’s downpour is not going to encourage them to make an appearance! I have 14 clematis now (plus a wild one), hoping this wind doesn’t do too much damage. And two don’t seem to be very happy.
Hope your toe recovers soon. I wouldn’t fancy running 100 yards with it let alone 100k!

I like the president. I planted one a few years ago but it hasn’t taken. Clematis don’t seem to survive in my garden except Montanas that run rampant. I’ve had ballerina in flower too. This year they’ve managed to overlap with queen of the night which was my original plan though it’s not usually worked out with one going over then the others flowering.
This week is dominated by the new slide. It’s taking up the lawn now but it could be a lot worse looking so count my blessings. It means Alice wants to be in the garden more which gives me time to do jobs. Though this weekend is torrential level of rain so far.

What a relief for you that there will be no further frost! The plants will be able to grow and flower uninhibited from now on! The tulips are stunningly bold! I read recently that there are some varieties of daffodil and tulip that might grow and flower in the subtropics. I will definitely look into that next year. The colours are well worth having to brighten up a garden.

Haven’t the tulips been fantastic? I bought lots of bulbs from Parkers last autumn because you write about them so much. I have really enjoyed them, I have chosen newly emerging plants this week though. There was someone on GW last night who had 150 clematis, made me think I need to be more imaginative when thinking about supports, I’ve got lots of wafting stems at the moment! We have had a long cool spell with frosts almost every night but there has been no significant damage to plants in the garden and the garden is getting the full appearance which comes after the spring spurt of growth. Tulips have had a good year – I particularly like ‘Slawa’ which you show above. Tulips in that colour range are very appealing, I find. As with you, we have had heavy overnight rain which was very welcome for the garden’s sake and, most obligingly, it is forecast to move off quickly this morning though conditions will hardly be amenable to gardening all the same.
Best wishes to all gardeners. I hope you are all keeping well.

Roses! They were a big deal for me, especially the last four. (It’s a long story . . . again.)
I would not have considered rain in regard to bulbs. We appreciate late rain so much, that we do not mind a little bit of damage. Such late rain is rarely enough to cause damage anyway. Tulips here finished quite a while ago. Rain finished more of a while ago.
Your tulips are pretty sharp, even if not as planned.

Well, yes! Of course it is. The climate here may be excellent for more types of gardening than any other climate, but would not be so great without supplemental irrigation to compensate for the lack of rain. Rainier climates have a distinct advantage.
