Greetings, does anyone else feel like the garden is running away from them? Everything seems to be growing so fast, including the weeds. I have a 100 mile race today, but don’t panic, I’m not running it, merely helping at one of the checkpoints. So while you read this I will be dishing out ham sandwiches and other snacks to the runners (or nutters, as they are also known).
While I’m up to my elbows in snacks and jelly babies on the South Downs Way, you can do Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide. Join in!
Here are mine for this week.
1 – Rodgersia pinnata. One of two rodgersia in my garden, the other was featured here the other week. They are quite different to look at, both colouring and leaf shape. This one is greener and has rounder lobes on the leaves.
2 – Weigela, not sure which variety. Less striking perhaps than my other one, w. ‘Bristol Ruby’, this one is nonetheless flowering like mad. It is in the wrong spot really, it could do with being in a sunnier position. As a result this shrub was for many years a twisted misshapen thing. It eventually got tall enough to get some daylight and has since thrived.
3 – Rose ‘Compassion’. For its first couple of years this climbing rose was largely hidden from view, obscured by a patch of loosestrife and a physocarpus. Last year to an extent, and certainly this year, it has grown up enough to be flowering in full view. I have a cutting of this rose taken last year, I need to plant it out.
4 – Geranium renardii ‘Terre Franche’. Bought last year, it had about three flowers, but this year is looking more promising.
5 – Kolkwitzia amabilis, Beauty Bush. This large shrub is actually in my neighbour’s garden but about a third of it overhangs my shady border, topping things out nicely and currently covered in rather lovely pink flowers.
6 – Jasmine beesianum, red jasmine. I bought this as a small plant for £1.79 in Morrisons a few years ago. I have it planted in a container with a clematis montana in the side alley. It has now grown to a good ten feet and not showing any signs of stopping. The flowers are teeny tiny, and to be honest a little underwhelming as a result.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to have a go, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be tip top. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a fab gardening weekend, enjoy the sunshine if you have it. Don’t forget to check back later as more links get added during the day.
Stay safe, I’ll be back next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
I agree, the garden is growing so fast it is hard to keep up with everything. I spend hours pulling out bindweed which I swear grows before my eyes. Impossible to get rid of the stuff. Roses blooming, Alliums finally joining the party and Geraniums galore as you’ll see in my post. Having seen your renardii I am quite keen on that colour. I do like how they keep a nice neat mound of foliage, unlike the others. And that beauty bush is very tempting. I think my pingback worked, but in case it got swamped in all the comments here’s mine.
and soon be time for this week’s!

I agree, definitely overwhelmed this week so no six from me. Too busy seeking a man with power equipment!

I did not know you could get a red jasmine – it looks pretty (even if small). More six here https://murtaghsmeadow.wordpress.com/2021/06/12/six-on-saturday-12th-june-2021/

I’m fascinated by the way you know the names of your plants, I’m not sure i have the same Jasmine, it looks similar, and as you say rather disappointing. Mine sends suckers quite a long way, so I’m not a fan of it. This week, like you I’m a bit overwhelmed by the number of things that need doing, what to do with a seed tray of tomato seedlings for instance? Anyway here’s my six: http://kasmaty.blogspot.com/2021/06/sixonsaturday-getting-dwarfed-by.html

Good evening. I wonder whether helping with the 100 mile run has put you off ? Maybe not. That Compassion rose is beautiful. Its curly petals are most unusual. Plenty of pretty colours this week in your garden.

Hardly! It helped that it was the first aid station, the runners are all pretty fresh still.
The later aid stations are like a war zone.

Good luck to all your quickly growing plants! I think the plants in your garden are competing against each other for a spot in the weekly post, and they’re all winning.

Yes it is a job to narrow it down to six at this time of year.

Oh, don’t speak about weeds. Having a terrible time with grasses blown in from surrounding agricultural land and an outbreak of couch grass which I didn’t pay enough attention to earlier in the year. It’s everywhere and so hard to get out now that other plants are growing.

My lips are sealed. Although, bindweed. I’ll just leave that there.

I aim to get my hands on Rodgersia before too much longer – I love the pattern of veins on the leaves and the texture they create. I’m also liking your geranium. Here are mine: https://roguegarden.wordpress.com.

The Rogersia has such lovely textured leaves! Not a plant that I know. The Kolwitzia is really beautiful! Do it flowers have a perfume at all? I have not seen the red Jasmine before, but its growth does look quite vigorous. I got rid of my Star Jasmine because it just took over, and now I just have to enjoy its special perfume when I’m walking past other gardens.

I was diligent in my checking. Based on my generous sample size I think I can be confident no runner was poisoned.

That jasmine is an interesting one! Re the Rodgersia: I was working in a border earlier in the week and spotted three small leaves of Rodgersia pinnata ‘Superba’, something I hadn’t seen in years though I had a recollection of having it around there. I also found the label – 2001 from Beth Chatto’s! I have moved it to a more favourable spot and hope it comes along better now. Here it my report from the week: https://anirishgardener.wordpress.com/2021/06/12/alls-well-that-ends-well/

I am still showing off roses, and the lilies that unfortunately bloom with them. I like the lilies. I would just prefer them to be elsewhere.
Rodgersia pinnata sounds like something that gets hung from a branch for blindfolded kids to clobber with a stick. It looks compelling though. I know the name, but not the plant. Red jasmine is a new one for me. It is very compelling. I have never heard of it. How fragrant is it?

Light fragrance, nothing to write home about.

There is a shrubby yellow jasmine here that blooms sparsely with nicely fragrant flowers. Although the fragrance is very similar to that of pink jasmine, there are not enough flowers for the fragrance to be very strong. Pink jasmine can be a bit . . . much.

I’ve not seen a rodgersia in real life. The leaves reminded me of horse chestnut too. It looks like it could grow huge? Very pretty geranium and a ‘Beauty bush’ sounds just what every garden should have.
It is weed city out there and I will be off to pull up yet more goose grass in the wilder areas today, and give all those planted out seedlings a good watering with my new 2 gallon watering can, ahead of the forecast hot weather tomorrow.
