So, October then. Downhill to Christmas! I only have one “short” run to do this weekend, a mere 32km, so I may actually get some gardening done this weekend. I did spend some time last Sunday battling with bindweed and the general state of overgrowth in the front garden, filling my green bin to the brim.
Time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week…
1 – Tithonia ‘Red Torch’, still green. This annual is taking its own sweet time to flower, it is now in a race against the first frost which should happen some time in the second half of this month. I’m not holding my breath…
2 – Too many bulbs. Again. Sigh, why do I do this to myself? I was actually late with my order this year, normally I get it done when the catalogue comes out in July. They all arrived yesterday. I got them out of the big box they came in, then put them straight back! I expect they’ll sit there brooding, waiting for me to get them in the ground and in pots. I bought an auger drill bit specifically designed with bulb planting in mind, I’m hoping that makes things easier to plant those destined for the ground.
If you’re interested, here is what I got.
3 – Aster ‘Bahamas’, maybe. Yet another aster, this one graces my front garden and has grown into a decent clump. About knee high, it is a rather shocking shade of pink. I should divide the clump next spring.
4 – Cobea Scandens, cup-and-saucer vine. Grown from seed this year, by the time i got around to planting them out I didn’t have a wall of fence with enough space to grow them up. I planted these out in a 20L tub with some canes for them to climb up. That seemed to work OK, they grew well, but they are only just flowering now, and not in numbers either. I didn’t feed them at all, nor was I particularly diligent with the watering, that may not have helped.
5 – Aster, small one! I bought this for 25p off the pity bench last year after it had mostly gone over. I don’t know what variety it is, but it is low growing, maximum 30 cm.
6 – Begonia ‘Angel’s Blush’. My original plant died over the winter, but I had taken some leaf cuttings that rooted nicely in the greenhouse. I planted some of those out in the border, and they seem happy enough, although quite a bit smaller than the original. If I remember I will dig them up and store them for the winter somehow. And if I forget, they’ll likely cark it.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to take part, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours, that would be splendid. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a super gardening weekend, don’t forget to pop back later as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back next weekend with another #SixOnSaturday.
Your asters are looking lovely and I am impressed by your bulbs – you will have wonderful colour in the spring. More six here :

So many bulbs! I’ve planted 50 so far and have another 100 or so to go in when it stops raining. I am relying, perhaps stupidly, on last year’s coming up again….. We shall see.
Here’s mine for this week https://mybeautfulthings.com/2021/10/02/six-on-saturday-2-10-21/
Have a good week. 🙂

I find tulips unreliable, alliums variable. Daffs are usually a dead cert to return.

On advice, I planted tulips very deeply last year in the hope that they will return. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. 😊

Yes, deep helps. I do have two or three groups in the ground that do come back every year.

Maybe too many bulbs? Probably not.

Very pretty asters. Oh, those bulbs! I’ve bought some allium and daffodils, but nothing like you’ve done. Good thing I don’t like tulips, there are so many to choose from.

Lovely Begonia! I’ve not seen that one offered here. But we have some similar with different names. Mine stay in pots and I’m impressed that you can plant yours out in the border. The asters are so nice, too. Such color! Here are my Six (seven) this week. I’m asking your indulgence as I had a good redemption and survival story to add after one of incredible kindness. Hope your week is a happy one, -WG https://woodlandgnome.wordpress.com/2021/10/02/six-on-saturday-gifts/

Are we all the same with ur bulb orders, do you think? I have a 3 or 4 friends who order through me so at least when my box comes it isn’t all mine, but it’s still a lot! I rang Peter Nyssen the other day to check when it was due, and it seems as if there were just a couple of outstanding items they were waiting for. Should come next week, but they won’t be planted for a while yet!! Your cobea is so pretty – when I tried them, mine spent all year growing but didn’t get round to flowering! Thanks for hosting. Oh, my goodness, that is a lot of bulbs! I cut down this year, but still running into the 300 mark. I will leave the tulips until next month so I can concentrate on the smaller ones plus those I removed from pots last year. I know it’s a daunting task, but you and I both know how rewarding this will be come the spring. As for summer flowers, like your Tithonia I have several that have failed to flower, though I did notice the sunflower I feature was actually open yesterday! Though after all this rain I suspect it’s popped it’s clogs now. Have a good weekend – raining here so any more bulb planting will have to wait.

Circa 500 bulbs? Good luck with that. 🙄 I’ve bought about 30 which is daunting enough. That begonia leaf is rather nice……any chance of a spare cutting, if I ask nicely? Have a good weekend.

I have spare plants, I shall reserve one for you. More like 800…

I also grew Cup and Saucer vine from seed this year, and planted them in a large pot. They’ve been flowering for a while, growing up a tall trellis, although not in profusion, as you say. Hummingbirds like them! Here’s my October Six:

Hope you don’t get too wet, today’s forecast is terrible! But perhaps you have a Sunday outing? Lovely bright colours in your post. Here’s my link https://n20gardener.com/2021/10/02/six-on-saturday-mushrooms-and-falling-leaves/

Pah, rain doesn’t stop us hardened ultramarathon runners. We love it! It was fairly wet for the second half of my run, no problem. No such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices!

I would give room to both these asters, yes I think short ones are the answer.

Beautiful and applause on your bulb delivery. Your bulb budget is certainly larger than mine. Happy planting. 🙂

I buy them wholesale so get good prices in comparison to a garden centre, say. Just have to buy in bulk!

Bulbs arrived here as well. ‘Bahamas’ is a lovely shocking pink colour and a good mid-height. I like.

Your Tithonia is certainly taking its time, I hope you get flowers before the frosts. The cup and saucer flower is delightful, and the list of bulbs very long. Will they all go in pots? I’ve been digging up an overcrowded flower bed to make room for more plant purchases. http://kasmaty.blogspot.com/2021/10/sixonsaturday-time-to-bring-in.html

I’m dithering about planting a stipa – I just have the feeling my chosen spot will not be sunny enough for it! You definitely need a ruthless streak to be a gardener.

Most of the tulips will go in pots, possibly even some of the alliums and daffs.

Wow, what a collection of bulbs you’ve got there. Part envy, part horror! The display will be lovely next year and I look forward to seeing that, specially the tulips. Meanwhile those asters are great. I have looked for a pity bench in our nursery, but not found one yet. I could do with some bargains to resuscitate 🙂
Lots of seed action going on in my garden, but it’s raining today. https://onewordhere.blogspot.com/2021/10/six-on-saturday-2021-10-02-southern.html

Aster, shocking pink. Gorgeous. Bulbs yes, ordered a few too. Tulips always an annual buy, if not the squirrel digging the bulbs, it’s a muntjack nibbling the fresh growth. Always happy to share obviously. Good.luck with your run.

For me it’s just that they are not reliably perennial, and I can’t be bothered to lift them and store etc.

There’ll be big discounts offered on tulip bulbs soonish, a temptation that snared me last year. All my Asters are tall, or would be if they weren’t bowing to the ground. Short ones could be the way to go. Here’smine: https://wp.me/p6bCCa-32d

Like others, I’m amazed at the number of bulbs you purchased. Bulbs are rather expensive here, so I couldn’t possibly buy so many, much as I would like to. I have an allium which is a pale imitation of your purple sensation and it has spread itself around the garden in an extravagant fashion…I’ll soon have to get rid of some! Your begonia leaf is gorgeous. It was lucky you grew some cuttings.

Wow 100 purple sensation. That should look fabulous. My bulb order arrived a while ago and got shoved in the cupboard, so I really do need to make a start on getting them in the ground.
Here’s my Six for this week – mostly the roses that get overlooked because they aren’t so glamorous or unusual, but are just really worth growing.

Morning Jonathan. I love it when you share your asters – they’re always a treat. The cup and saucer vine is so pretty. I’ve grown it once but mine was purple – yours seems a very pale pink.
Can you believe I have yet to order my bulbs? It’s unusual for me but I am very behind in so many things this year.
Here’s my contribution this week including a snap of a stunning garden in Durham and an agave having babies.

Even without flowers, my six are RAD this week; not because of the pictures, but because of the topic. I can not stop bragging about it!
Anyway, you certainly got a LOT of bulbs! That is a LOT of tulips!

A nice choice of bulbs and a chore to plant! Lucky you have a drill. It’s great to have a cobaea flower in the first year, I was not successful last year but I’m not losing, I will redo.

Groan, I have the same feeling about bulbs right now, why do we give ourselves so much work?! I tried Tithonia for the first time this year and mine have been good, flowering for at least the last 6 weeks now – beginner’s luck maybe 😉

Your bulb order is staggering. How do you find space for all I them? I have also been attracted to the cup and saucer vine and have been considering one for the “tropical” back area. Here are mine: https://roguegarden.wordpress.com

I’ll put most of them in pots on the patio, I treat the tulips as annuals for the most part.

Ah. Too much trouble to dig up/store the bulbs or are they so diminshed in subsequent years that it’s not worth the effort?
