It’s 11:30pm on Friday night and I’ve just remembered I haven’t written this post yet. I am therefore going to be super brief!
1. Bloody tulips. All finally planted! I reused the soil/compost from the tomatoes for the first batch but for the second batch I used homemade compost. It’s by far the best I’ve ever made! It has sat in the bay for a year or more, was made with mainly grass, veg peelings and wood chips further chopped by running over them with the mower. It is fine, even and feels fantastic.
2. Greenhouse. Not completely cleared, but less disgraceful than it was. There were an awful lot of plant husks and an even greater quantity of dessicated compost. Such a waste.
3. Helenium seed heads
4. Sedum. Out with the old, in with the new.
5. Persicaria red dragon, stems. One of many plants I should cut back this weekend.
6. Penstemon. Not the first time by this year, but worthy of another look as it is still flowering nearly 2 weeks into December. It is not alone. I still have roses and even a few clematis flowers. Strange.

I love the photo of the sedum buds popping up, also congratulations on the tulip planting. Penstemons are amazing in the way they seem to carry on flowering. The sedum buds are lovely. You amaze me with your industry in the planting of bulbs. What are your plans for the greenhouse over winter, once cleaning is done?

Afternoon! Well done on the tulips! I’m never sure whether to be please or concerned about signs of spring in December, but it’s great to see that new growth on the sedums.
I’ve been out and about this week and have therefore cheated, not for the first time! Realistically my last contribution of 2021 so have a great Christmas and see you in the new year! Louise

Well done on getting the tulip bulbs planted, maybe you need to scale down a tad on the number you purchase? Although I know that in the spring they will look fabulous. I’m leaving my perennials until February to cut back, hoping the stems/stalks etc help to shield the roots from excess wet! (or because I hate gardening in the cold and damp). Stay well Prop!

Your compost sounds delightful! Well done. Strong contrast to mine, which serves only to introduce tomatoes, avocado pips and courgettes to unsuitable parts of the garden. Oh well, one can but dream…
Here it is all about preparing the garden to survive the heat and dryness of summer, and not being too ambitious about planting. Ha ha. Well, I’m keeping the planting to the shady areas and the veggie bed.

Well done on planting out all your tulips! What a mammoth task. I love the new growth buds of the Sedum. The colour of the Penstemon flower is really pretty. It sounds as if you will have a busy weekend with all those chores lined up. I need to catch up on some gardening on Sunday, as I am far behind with all the chores. Here too the penstemons are still in bloom and this is one of the few flowers visible in the garden at this time of the year. Your homemade compost looks great! I love to see the new shoots of the sedum come through. The little shoots are so plump, and then they go through that lovely dome like stage, (before sprawling all over the place).

For half an hours, you were pretty quick.
Your Sedum spectabile looks about like mine, which seems odd for your colder winter. I would think that they could get ruined by frost if not buried with mulch or insulation. I know they survive in colder winters because I see pictures of their darkened dried floral trusses contrasting appealingly against snow. I just figured that they grew later.
