It’s spring, whichever definition you choose for the start time. We have been enjoying a sunny spell here in the south of England, glorious sunshine and some enjoyable warmth in the middle of the day. Not summer, far from it, but very pleasant indeed. The sun has brought on a spurt of growth in the garden, everything is kicking off. I managed to spend several hours out in the sunshine last weekend, in my shorts even, clearing away old growth, planting the last of the alliums (already growing well in little pots), mowing the lawn. General pottering really. I have managed, mainly through lack of opportunity rather than sheer willpower, to sow zero seeds this year. Last year was a disaster on that front, and I am going cold turkey this year. I did, however, buy some dahlia tubers that I need to pot up this weekend. I’m not that far gone.

Here are my Six for this week…

1 – Narcissus ‘Thalia’. The nun, or the penitent novice, bride maybe, of the daffodil world.

2 – Dwarf magnolia stellata. A little later than normal, but going gangbusters now. It smells fantastic, a nice greeting as one walks up the drive to the front door.

3 – Fatsia japonica. Fresh leaves looking lush in the spring sunshine.

4 – Narcissi jonquilla ‘Martinette’. On the opposite side of the front door to the magnolia, these are also rather jolly, with several blooms per stem. I think I could have planted more in here, although the roots of the clematis and the rose do limit space a bit.

5 – Fuchsia genii. As I walked down the patio steps on the hunt for photo-worthy specimens, I noticed this little be-potted shrub and it took me a minute to remember what it was. It didn’t do much in the first year, but last year it grew on a fair bit, so I am expecting a better show this year.

6 – Wallflower ‘Fire King’, maybe. I have a few of these dotted about, I think bought as bareroots a couple of years ago, or perhaps they were given to me. Anyway, the point is they are lovely.

Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to join in, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be triffic. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.

Have a smashing weekend, I hope you get some gardening done while the sun still shines.

I’ll be back next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
