I just got back from a couple of days in Paris with work. Pastries were consumed. It’s late Friday evening now, the photos were taken in dusk light, so you’ll have to imagine how much better they’d look if taken in bright sunshine. I’m off to get ready for my run tomorrow (or today) so I’ll leave you to get on with Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide!

Here are my Six for this week.

1 – Clematis double act. C. ‘Blue Angel’ and C. ‘Madame Julia Correvon’. I managed to achieve two things here this year. First, I managed to keep most of the flowers on my side of the fence, and second, I managed to train the stems from both plants in such as a way as to get both sets of flowers combining nicely.

2 – Rose ‘Buff Beauty’. In its 3rd summer, I think, possibly only its 2nd. It has grown up the trellis well with a bit of help from me, and is flowering profusely too.

3 – Dianthus superbus. I bought this and several other dianthus plants from a specialist nursery a couple of year ago. This is the only one left, the others are nowhere to be seen.

4 – Knautia macedonica ‘Melton Pastels’. I’ve grown these from seed in the past, but this time round I just bought three plants. They’ve gone in the Lilac border where they will get a bit of sun, but not that much, so we’ll see how they get on. They are flowering enthusiastically enough at the moment.

5 – Rose ‘Ali Baba’. I counted the buds on this climber the other day, there are well over 200, many of them out at the moment. It will mean me deadheading over 200 spent blooms from it as well, but so be it. Very happy with my roses at the moment, they are all going great guns. This is obviously due mostly to expert training and pruning on my part (pah!) but credit should also grudgingly be given to Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic, the foliar feed I administer fortnightly during the growing season. They seem to thrive with it, very little issues with aphids or blackspot etc, just lots of healthy, glossy foliage and a lot of flowers.

6 – Clematis ‘Polish Spirit’. That’s Polish as in Poland, not Polish as in Mr Sheen. Planted in the spring last year, it didn’t do a lot, and I did fear for it a bit this year when at first it put out a meagre single stem. But I needn’t have worried, later in the spring plenty more stems emerged and it has now topped out the 6′ trellis against which it grows, along with a moss rose. I bought this in the hope that it was the same variety as one growing in some friends garden. Theirs is absolutely magnificent, 15′ high and totally covered in flowers at this time of year.
