We have had some more rain, several hours of good light rain yesterday. Just in time for the hose-pipe ban. I now need to not only gather elusive enthusiasm for the watering task, but now it’s more difficult, I have to use a watering can. I’ll still fill it with the hose, but them’s the rules. Pffft.
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Rose ‘Harlow Carr’. This is a confirmed ID, the label is still attached, which means last week’s pink rose was ‘Gabriel Oak’, not ‘Harlow Carr’. Mystery solved.
2. Rhodedendron ‘Wine & Roses’. I bought this in a garden centre frenzy, back before the summer got too unusually hot and unmanageable. Planted in a big patio pot for now, it seems to be doing OK despite my rather sporadic watering. A compact, evergreen variety, I may leave it in this pot for the duration, we’ll see how big it gets. I think these must be flower buds, but that remains to be seen, they’re not due to flower till the spring.
3 – Geranium ‘Crystal Lake’. This plant is suffering a little from the dry weather, the flowers are very small, or at least they seems smaller than I remember them being in previous years. I might need to move it to a more conducive location. I really like the colour and the markings.
4 – Rose ‘Dame Judy Dench’. The final rose in my triplet of shrub roses that are now planted in the big planters on the patio. The plant is looking a little distressed, lack of water during it’s critical bedding in period, plus I haven’t been diligent in feeding my roses this year. Must try harder. Still, nice colour, and it smells fabulous.
5 – Rose ‘Crispy Brown’. Sheesh. Rose ‘Claire Austin’, in fact, but she is looking a little, um, parched. Poor Claire. I will give her a good drink, but I fear she may be beyond salvage. There might be a resurrection next spring, so I won’t lose hope just yet. Not looking good…
6 – Dwarf hops. Well, at least it’s not brown.

My roses are having a second flush of flowers, they obviously liked the warmer weather though it wasn’t anywhere near as hot as you’ve had it. Lots of showers here this week and some mizzly days too and although there is lots to do in the garden I have nowhere to put anything so I’ve stopped work for now! And still got that bamboo to eradicate…

We are fortunate to have had good gardening weather here in the American South. Hope this drought is breaking for my British brethren.

Due to having a water meter I’ve been using a watering can for 2 months now, I don’t think my back can take much more! Roses have started flowering again but I think I’ll be losing my rhodo and camellia buds, flowering won’t be very good next year, but can’t help it.

We’ve had a bit of rain this week as well, but as Jim says, there’s still a desert just below the surface. Luckily the rain butts are full once again! Your rhodo buds don’t look that great…but the geranium is gorgeous!

In other thoughts – I’m still struggling with the dreaded wordpress white screen. I have cleared the cache and resorted to using another browser which seems to have given me a work round but I fear they may be hidden setbacks to come. Any thoughts anyone?

Yes, these are rhododendron flower buds. I hope the leaves are not too drooping because this is the case here due to the lack of rain. Water them from time to time to avoid seeing the flower buds die. You are growing dwarf hops: how tall are they? A good hard prune and Claire may recover. I’ve been bad about feeding mine too. Going to give them all a good spring mulch next year I think for the improved moisture retention and feed.

I am sorry that my first three are rather similar. I did not notice it until now, and it is too late to change them.
Your rhododendron buds are floral, but all seem to be a bit too developed to survive through winter. I am unfamiliar with that cultivar though. I remember the name, but it was not one of the cultivars that we grew.

I haven’t seen hops in a garden for a few years. My parents tried to grow them with vague beer making ideas. I can’t remember what happened to them. Do you plan to try beer making with yours?

Morning! We’ve had a couple of good doses of rain here this week too which is a relief. My #Six from the plot includes my Braeburn apple which seems almost as confused as your rhododendron 🙄

Good morning. That brown rose doesn’t look happy at all. I mentioned last week that I rarely watered roses but, of course, this year things are different. The rhododendron is looking promising.
