As you may have gathered from the decreasing levels of enthusiasm in my weekly posts, gardening has become something of a chore in the last year, much lower down on the priority list than its previously unassailable position at the top. For me, Six on Saturday has become less a joy and more a weekly reminder of how much there is to do that hasn’t and likely won’t get done, and I feel like there is less and less to show off. I’ve decided to give myself a break, so this will be my last Six on Saturday, at least for the time being.
Fear not! I am passing the hosting baton to Jim Stephens who has been in the gang since the very first one back in May 2017. Jim is an excellent gardener and with ‘Garden Ruminations‘ he writes a mean blog post too. I think I’m right in saying he has a 100% attendance record for Six on Saturday as well as posting other interesting and informative content. If you aren’t already following his blog, do! I expect I will pop by from time to time, but as a regular punter, not the host. I’ve agreed with Jim that he is the custodian “for the time being”, allowing for the possibility that at some point I’ll regain both the time and the mojo to take it on again.
I remain tickled pink that this random idea I had over 5 years ago has become a weekly joy to so many, and will be very happy to see it continue to thrive in Jim’s capable hands.
With all that said, here are my Six for this week…
1 – Untidy windfall. Among the many things not done this year, windfalls are lying uncollected. If I ever get around to it, they’ll go on the compost heap. There are still apples on the tree, I really should get the pole picker out of the shed and retrieve them before they also hit the deck.

2 – Heuchera ‘Lime Marmalade’. Planted earlier this year, and still alive. This is a by-no-means guaranteed outcome in my garden this year, so bravo to lil ole heuchera here.

3 – Salvia ‘Amethyst Lips’. The less brash, more sophisticated cousin of ‘Hot Lips’. I recall complaining last year that this plant was not doing well in its large pot. It still isn’t doing well, very few flowers. I really need to plant it out. Might have to wait till the spring now.

4 – Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’. Definitely autumn.

5 – Aster ‘Bahamas’. Next to actually being in the Bahamas, I suppose this is a poor second place, but still, some October brightness is always welcome.

6 – Melianthus major. I’ve gone on about this plant a couple of times, I think. To recap, I grew this and another plant from seed last year. They hung on for dear life in the greenhouse over the winter and were planted out in the spring this year, I believe. They are both about 3′ tall, bit more perhaps, and looking rather splendid. If happy, and if they don’t get killed off by frost, they should grow to 6′ or even 8′. I really like the blue-green, sawtooth pattern of the leaves. Technically an evergreen sub-shrub, it’s typically grown as an herbaceous perennial in the UK. Unless it is a very mild winter, it should die back to the ground and emerge again with vigour in the spring.

Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to have a go, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below, as usual.
Since this is the last one from me for a while, from next week Six on Saturday will work exactly the same way…BUT… Look out for Jim’s post instead of mine, and pop your link in a comment on his post instead of mine. Thank you to the gang, to all of you that contribute, whether that is regularly or as the mood takes you – I hope that you continue to do so. And a special thank you to Jim for agreeing to take it on.
Au revoir for now!
Enjoy your new found time!

Not having posted last week Iām a bit late to say thank you for being the host of SOS and bringing so many gardeners together. It has been such a good learning process as well, and I have many things in my garden that I first heard about on a Saturday š
I have been very grateful for getting to āknowā so many enthusiastic gardeners. Hope youāll be able to do a SoS post every now and then, and good luck with your other endeavours. Jane

I shall miss you, but sometimes it’s good to take a step back. I’ve been unable to make regular contribution too over the past months – not that I’ve fallen out of love with gardening, just that I’ve fallen out of love with a weekly writing and photographing commitment. Enjoy the other things you do, especially running. Maybe a running blog…..?

Thanks for creating and hosting this communion of gardeners during all this time! And how wonderful to give yourself a break and pass the baton to Jim. I wondered if it was ever just a lot to keep up with. It’s always lovely to see what other gardeners are up to around the world–when it brings them joy to share. Hope it’s a restful break for you! -lisa the compulsive gardener š … I did do a post today, but had too many photos for an official SOS. Hello! I am away from the garden this week so no SoS from me. Like others, I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for hosting SoSs till now. I came across your blog and this theme by chance this year; being able to read about, see the gardens of others and to ask for advise and suggestions from other keen (and knowledgeable!) gardeners is a real pleasure. I now look forward to reading each Saturdayās submissions with anticipation!
I hope you get back to enjoying your garden at your own pace, and enjoy your other hobbies:) Take care

I am sorry to read that you are hanging up your SoS hat for the time being, but I fully understand why you are doing it. At least numbers on ‘my’ In a Vase on Monday meme have dropped so it is more manageable than it used to be! Good to know that Jim is willing to take it on, as I find it a useful tool for posting what can oftenbe a mixed batch of things. Thanks so much for hosting – you certainly deserve a break. I completely understand about the way youāve been feeling about the garden – I really lost my mojo this year too and still havenāt completely regained it. It happens. This too shall pass. You have brought so much joy with this weekly event, I hope you are suitably proud, several people have told me how uplifting they find it. I hope that whatever you choose to focus on next uplifts you and fills you with as much (indeed even more!) pleasure as you have brought to so many. Look forward to Jimās hosting – you could not be leaving us in more capable hands! I for one will miss you but I do understand. Being so far behind in my garden doings is the norm. Weeds grow really well and come back after removal before I can finish one bed .Of course I am slow and sometimes the ground is just too hard to work but I keep at it. Time will tell.

I eventually plucked up the courage to join SonS at the end of September 2017. Itās been a learning curve both plant wise and technically wise. Very few see my little garden (my choice) but itās been lovely to share it virtually thanks to you. Iām one of the lucky Sixers to have seen Jim and Sueās beautiful garden in the flesh and it must be good to know that your baby is going to have a holiday in such capable hands. Good luck with the running and enjoy gardening just for yourself.

Like others, I’m not entirely surprised – training for your long races would take up about as much time as gardening, many weeks, never mind the weekend races themselves. (I’ve wondered if you had helpers, clicking away at comments and links on race weekends…).
Thanks very much for starting this meme – I’ve learned about so many new plants from Sixers here, and planted some of them. I also learned a thing or two about propagation (š). And met, via this page and their blogs, some wonderful people who happen to be gardeners. Including Jim.
Good luck with future races; don’t ignore the compost bin, and hope to read you soon!

I can’t say that I am surprised that you have come to this decision, I think we have all noticed a lack of enthusiasm this year (and the lack of the monthly border patrols) and I know how time consuming hosting a challenge can be, replying to comments and visiting the blogs of all the participants – a joy when your heart is in it, a chore when it’s not. I normally have only hosted a challenge for a year so for you to have done this for five is pretty amazing, week after week. I applaud you! And it has been wonderful to meet you and the family so I do hope you will occasionally blog and let us know how everyone is doing, including your current obsession with running šµ and thanks to you I have met some fabulous people from all around the world.
In the meantime I wish you well and hope your lovely garden can forgive your lack of dedication – hopefully the enthusiasm will return and you can reclaim the title of The Propagator.

Hi Jon,
Would I be right in thinking you unticked the settings box for comments to be manually approved so that they come up on your blog straight away. Also that the means by which people get notified of a Six on Saturday post is to follow your blog (now my blog) and say yes to getting notifications of posts?
There may be more questions but IĆ¢ĀĀll keep the pestering to a minimum.

Jon, thank you so much for the last 5 years. I’ve not been regular in the last year, but over the years I’ve learned such a lot AND found such beautiful gardens across the globe.
Climate change has been the biggest alteration for me – the persistent La Nina conditions prevent me from gardening as much as I want and thus there’s often nothing much for me to post. Life goes on.
It’s good that you’ll pop in and out and how wonderful of Jim to take SoS on. He’s a good egg and so knowledgable with it!
Very best to you and again, thank you!

By reading the word “transition”, I was expecting those few words from you. Itās reasonable to take a break if you take less pleasure. Moreover, for some time, I thought in parallel that it was perhaps necessary to evolve the Six concept . I will give the ideas to Jim eventually? I think that running any meme for this long is a wonderful achievement, it certainly is popular, even with those who just use the tag and post six photos on twitter each week without the blog post. If your heart is no longer in it then you’ve made the right decision. I only joined this year but it has brought me great joy each week and I have learnt so much about gardening from all the others who join in, so thank you, I’m so glad I discovered the meme. Good luck with the running and everything else that you want to achieve. Here’s this week’s six from me https://wp.me/p2Eu3u-iEf

All the very best with the running and stuff in the meantime and hopefully we’ll get to wander and wonder at your plants and garden again soon.
Before I started joining in with Six on Saturday I’d been thinking about blogging about things gardeny for a while but wasn’t sure how I’d actually go about it. Then I discovered Six on Saturday. It’s helped with my rambling writings (and meeting deadlines that weren’t actually deadlines), it’s made me appreciate that there’s always something going on in the garden, whatever time of year it is, it’s introduced me to all sorts of plants I’d never heard of (and needed) and most importantly it introduced me to a thoroughly nice community of fellow gardeners. A big thank you.
Oh, nice plants too by the way! The photo of the Melianthus major is great https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2022/10/15/six-on-saturday-15-october-2022/
