Greetings from a positively tropical Royal Berkshire. It has been a glorious few days, sadly office-bound for me, for the most part. The garden has been enjoying the sunshine, everything is growing on strong, including the pesky weeds. Especially bindweed. It has become a nightly ritual for me to go armed with a hand-fork to dig as much of it up as I can. More appears the next day. Constant vigilence like this does weaken it significantly. I will still get the odd bit popping up from a root fragment, but much easier to manage. There is a brief window of opportunity to tackle it – while the rest of the planting is still getting going, the bindweed is clearly visible. There are nights when I go to sleep thinking about it. Weird. Anyhoo, time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a weed (!), a flower, a plan, a failure, interesting foliage, a seedling, anything at all. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week. You may notice a theme….
1 – Tulip ‘Brown Sugar’. A sultry blend of colours. Like.
2 – Tulip ‘Dynasty’. A pleasing shade of pink with creamy white accents. More by luck than judgment, I seem to have grouped together three pots so have achieved something of a mass planting effect.
3 – Tulip ‘Purple flag’ & ‘Flaming flag’. At the time of planting it seemed like a good idea to put these two together, I think it works quite well.
4 – Tulip ‘Orange dynasty’. These might be my favourite. I like the mix of orange and pink in these.
5 – Tulip ‘White Dream’. These were planted in a pot with Queen of the Night, aiming for a nice contrasting black and white effect. Sadly Queenie is disgracefully late, so the white’uns are putting in a creditable solo performance.
6 – Tulip ‘Abu hassan’, Rich and velvety, allegedly very perennial. A little close in appearance to both Orange Dynasty and Brown Sugar. I like it well enough but in the back of my mind, I wish I’d ordered something more different. All the excuse I need to buy more this Autumn. Like I need an excuse!
That’s my Six for this week. I make no apology for my tulip focused single-mindedness! The tulips are fabulous this year, repaying many times over the tedious bulb-planting back in the Autumn. I hope these will last a while yet, and there’s still plenty of flower power to come with later blooming varieties.
What’s going on in your garden? If you’d like to join in, just write your post, then add a comment below with the link to your post, and maybe add a link back to this blog in yours. For more details, please see the brief participant’s guide. Join in, it’s a lot of fun!
Have a great weekend, enjoy whatever sunshine the weather is kind enough to throw in your direction, and don’t forget to check back in as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back next week with another Six on Saturday.
Lovely tulips!!! Mine are called Spring Green and are supposed to bloom at the same time as our Camassia. We’ll see if that happens a bit later.
I’m late with my six… https://fromourisland.wordpress.com/2018/04/22/six-on-saturday-a-day-late/

Oh my! These are so excellent! I know I said something earlier, but I am too tired to remember it. We do not grow tulips because they do not get much chill here. I will probably grow ‘White Dream’ someday as an annual, just because it looks so exquisite in pictures. Well, they all look exquisite in these pictures.

Many of the hybrids are not reliably perennial here either. We are often encouraged to treat them as an annual. I usually plant up in containers for year 1 then move them to the borders for year 2 and beyond. If they come back they come back, bonus flowers.

Yup. I get that. I just cut down some overgrown laurels. If they come back, that would be fine. If not, at least I tried. I could not leave them the way they were.

Only half of my six are Tulips, mainly due to a “not enough tulips” problem!

I’m wondering if I’ve moved to Holland without realising! I’ve been away all day and left the blog in the tender care of resident cat who, it seems, forgot to link up here. So his Six on Caturday is at https://rivendellgarden.blog/?p=3496, largely a view from low down. Though there are tulips involved, sorry.

It just has to be about the tulips at this time of year, they’re so beautiful. I battle the bindweed from over the fence. Just when you think you’re on top of it it rears it’s head somewhere else and laughs.

What a great display, worth all the heartache “wot more tulip bulbs to plant?!” last year. Love them all, but especially fond of Brown Sugar. Good for a dance too. And an ear worm. Darn it! Here are mine, just one tulip 🙂 https://offtheedgegardening.com/2018/04/21/six-on-saturday-pressure/

When my tulips opened this week, they looked like they were laughing w/joy. I decided not to feature them, though, after seeing all the tulips on Twitter. I adore mine, bu there are much more artistic & unusual examples. Have to say, yours are really something else. So sorry the Queen of the Night aren’t open yet. How spectacular would that be? Maybe we’ll still get to see them together.
Here’s my Six, w/a coupla puzzles I hope the better informed can help me w/. I’m running in 1st gear this week, but hope to get to everyone’s post before next Saturday. Wouldn’t want to miss a single Six report!

I hate trying to remove bindweed – I’ve given up hope of getting rid of it completely from the allotment, as it grows from the council’s patch of ground by the gate, and just creeps across every plot!
I love all those tulips – they look even more stunning in that glorious sunshine we’ve been having.

I can never have enough of tulips, my own, others, photos of them. Bring them on! I love Brown Sugar (maybe that’s because of the memories of a much younger self) and your Dynasty looks divine with the yellow daffs. I don’t tend to go for pink ones, but these are rather eleagant.
But I am not showing you tulips this week, but weeds. The sun has brought out far more of those than I would like and I have spent days pulling, digging and scraping out weeds, and still they appear…

A fab display of tulips sir! Keep going with the bindweed – I had loads when I moved in but kept removing it piece by piece and after a couple of years have hardly seen it again apart from when it sneaks from next door. There are lots of scaremongers when it comes to bindweed, but it can definitely be controlled! Any way, here’s my six:
