Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower (fat chance!), berries, seeds, beasties, a job to do, a failure, anything at all. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Mina lobata seeds. The very successful mina lobata had not yet set seed, or at least they were not yet ripe, by the time the frost got it. I salvaged a few seed heads when I tidied the plants up and they have been drying out in the shed. I was a bit skeptical this would work, but sure enough it seems to be. I should have plenty of fresh seeds to use next year.
2 – Rose Dr Eckener. I think this is my angriest rose. It has a top to toe covering of closely packed thorns, and each feels like it has been sharpened deliberately. Definitely one that I make sure is well tied in, one of these waving about could do some proper mischief.
3 – Angelica archangelica, new growth. I tidied up the front garden the other day, cutting almost everything back. It is always nice to clear away the old to reveal the new. This plant is well ahead of the game.
4 – Early lupins. I sowed these some months ago, from seed collected from this summer’s flowers. They got off to a fast start and perhaps unsurprisingly have slowed right down as we head in to winter. The roots will still be busy establishing below the surface, but I expect all this top growth will wither away soon, to be replaced, I trust, with fresh growth.
5 – Allium Christophii. I enjoyed these so much last year I have bought a load more, partly by way of insurance, but mostly because I hope to have a small army of them. This one is from last year’s batch, I noticed it poking up as I was scouring the estate looking for something, anything, worthy to include here. Jolly nice to see it.
6 – Hydrangea ‘annabel’. Like a floral Mrs Faversham, this shrub is still wearing its now faded gown. There are about 5 stems, each topped with a crispy pom-pom. I’ll have to prune it back at some point, but that can wait for a while.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to join in, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be super duper. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
No gardening for me this weekend, am off with Mrs P for a stay on a houseboat near Bath. Am hoping it comes with heating of some kind. Don’t forget to pop back as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back next week for another #SixOnSaturday.

I love Bath – hope you have a great weekend. Your rose thorn picture kept me guessing – I couldn’t make out what it was.

I’ve discovered lupins have an enormous tap root. At least mine do – have you also noticed that? More snow this past week in Southeastern Ontario, although it may all melt away Sunday and Monday…nevertheless, some pretty images from the garden to be had…

Those thorns must be a nightmare when pruning. I hope the flowers are worth it. Enjoy your weekend on board. Here’s my Six for this week. Not a lot of green here….. https://pruneplantsow.wordpress.com/2019/12/07/sixonsaturday-december-7th-all-is-white/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

I also saved some not quite ripe Mina lobata seeds but they still don’t look ripe. I’m in Bath on Tuesday (not very far for me). At least it’s warmed this weekend for your boat stay. Enjoy.

Congratulations to you and Mrs P. Have a lovely weekend. Love your inventiveness with the rose – at this time of year all our brain power is needed. 🙂 I’m holding my lupin seeds over until next year. Just because I collected them quite late. Here’s the result of my garden wanderings https://wp.me/p97pee-tQ

I’ve been wondering for a long time what your featured photo might be … until I see it’s a rose …not easy on my phone.
Enjoy your 20th anniversary. ( It’s 21 for us this year … not so far …😉)

Morning all. Have you come across the chap who runs higgledy garden? A mail order flower seed business that he runs from a canal boat that trundles around the backwaters of England – just one man and a dog. I always thought it sounded like quite a romantic life. Heating does sound essential though! Here are this weeks six…

Yes, I have seen that. Have bought seeds too I think. I’m pleased to report that the boat has radiators…

We went up to Bath midweek, for the Christmas Market and to see my niece who’s at uni there. Quite the adventure, I don’t get away much. More new growth/seed sowing items than dead/dying items, what optimists we try to be. The Angelica thinks it’s spring for sure. https://wp.me/p6bCCa-24Y

Hope you don’t get cold on that boat! I will watch your lupins eagerly! I’ve been sowing lupins for two years now – disasters. I sowed singly in pots (although I did prick some out as well). First of J.I No. 1. Then realised lupins don’t like alkaline conditions – switched to a peat-based (naughty me). Switched also to rainwater, instead of tap (ours is very limey). Still, for the third sowing in a row, they started well then just turned yellow, withered and died. I’ve bought some plants (growing well for a season now), but really wish I could do the seed thing!

Interesting, I have some seed collected from the lupins I bought this year for sowing next year. At least I know now to manage my expectations!

I suspect that I’ve just done something terribly wrong and that yours will be fine. It was infuriating. I have my eyes on your lupins – look forward to the next installment! Hope I can learn something!

I grew some from seed in spring this year, it was embarrassingly easy (sorry!). I did give them a good rub between two sheets of sandpaper to rough up the coating before sowing.

I found it very, very easy to germinate them. Didn’t do the sandpaper. It was the growing on – about 12 weeks after germination – when they slowly started going yellow and eventually died (this was in summer, so not going dormant). I wondered if they would have liked deeper pots, since they have a long taproot? I tried 3 times and still no joy. Not beaten – will try again, using acidic compost, sowing singly to a pot, and only rain water. I do hope yours will be fine. Sorry – I seem to have mixed you up with N20 gardener, so commented to them as if it was you!

I hadn’t a clue what that top photo was, thinking it must’ve been taken thru a microscope, perhaps of some aquatic life form. Your lupins are looking mighty fine. Mine’ve already died back but aren’t inside. The Eye of Sauron has settled nicely. You’ve not done too shabby, finding a nice Six for this week. Enjoy your weekend! https://lorahughes.blogspot.com/2019/12/surprises.html

Have a lovely weekend and congratulations to you both. I remember a very mild autumn day when all the guests walked from the register office to the reception without extra coats and scarves! Here are this week’s Six-on-Saturday.

Fat chance?! There is plenty blooming. I should have posted six pictures of flowers. I did not think of that. I would have liked to get pictures of autumn foliar color, but there is not much out there. Anyway, the link above is for my six this week.
I remember your Mina lobata. It was intriguing because it is so unfamiliar and . . . strange.
I remember the Allium christophii too, not because it is totally unfamiliar, but because I have been wanting to try it, or one of the Alliums that is not too bulky.
