The garden seems to be responding the mild weather we have been having. On my Friday lunchtime potter around the garden I was surprised to find I had plenty of things I could include today. Last weekend was largely a washout, this weekend looks set to be a total loss gardening-wise, heavy rain and high winds throughout. Thanks a bunch Dennis! I have a pretty long run to do on Sunday morning so that will be lots of fun. Not. Anyhow, time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a flower, a job to do, a pest, a mystery plant, a harvest, anything at all, so long as it is happening in the garden around now. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week…
1 – Digitalis mertonensis, seedlings. I sowed these a couple of weeks ago, I think. D. mertonensis, or the strawberry foxglove, is a short-lived perennial cross between d. lutea and d. grandiflora. They may flower this year but more likely next year. They get to about 75cm tall, best in partial shade. I’ll let them get a bit bigger before moving them on to a tray or individual pots.
2 – Crocus, a cornucopia. I am seeing the benefit of planting excessive amounts of bulbs each year for the last 2 or 3 years. I’m getting a lot of crocuses! Many are dotted about in the borders, but some are now appearing in the lawn too. Lovely to see a bit of colour in the garden again.
3 – Acanthus mollis, bear’s breeches. I remain underwhelmed by this plant. Supposedly it gets quite large, but this has never got more than a foot high, usually just giving up and going back to sleep. Flowers? Forget it. I have read that they prefer to be confined, so perhaps I need to move it to a pot of some kind.
4 – Persicaria ‘purple fantasy’. I enjoyed this plant last year, so I’m pleased to see it emerging for another crack. It was also easy to raise babies from cuttings so I expect, unable to help myself, I’ll have another bash at that.
5 – Prunus kojo no mai. I was surprised to see one of my KNM’s beginning to bud out already. I hope it doesn’t get frost nipped.
6 – Allium, purple sensation. I have 49 of these, most are poking through now. I will soon be sprinkling them liberally around the borders, along with several other varieties I have in similar state in the greenhouse. As a little bonus, a teaser, through the mucky window you can see some of my tulip pots, coming on nicely.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to join in, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be right-on brother. For more information you can read the participant guide.
I doubt I will be getting much gardening done, given the grim forecast, I hope you get the odd lull you can take advantage of. Or, put your feet up and spend the weekend reading all the SoS posts!
I’ll be back next weekend with another #SixOnSaturday.
Nearly forgot here’s my minor offering for SoS https://gardeningmyway.home.blog/2020/02/15/six-on-saturday-15th-feb-2020/

Ace Crocus pics. Glad all those you planted paid off very well. Hoping for my small offering of species Crocus to be in the next edition of my SoS, as they weren’t quite ready for their debut for flowering. Seems, like you say, the mild weather is having a growth spurt. I’ve been looking around the garden today, during a brief blue sky moment, of all the new fresh buds appearing. Spring is arriving but hope there’s not too much frost to kill things off 😦

What a pretty butter yellow crocus! I’ve never seen one such a mild shade before. Looks good enough to eat. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice six this week. Things are really moving forward across the pond. Its still very cold here, but on an optimistic note I found a lettuce seedling germinating spontaneously in one of my house plants. Oh, I love Crocus, wonderful to see the pictures. I had the same experience with Bear’s Breeches in another garden. I am not sure which one of us gave up first. Oddly despite living in hurricane country I never realized the UK had such bad winter weather and bomb cyclones. Stay safe. Things are making their debut aren’t they? I just adore Spring! Our meteorologist says the plants are 20 days ahead of schedule in the garden. Some of my plants are up and some are not. The ones that I think should be are not and plants that should not are having a second go with new green growth! Mother Nature at her best! My post was photographed in Riga, Latvia, again this week………I could not help myself I loved this city! Have a good week! https://thecadyluckleedy.com/2020/02/15/sixish-on-saturdaysay-it-with-flowers/

Just popped back to add that I was reading about Acanthus this morning in Foliage Plants by Christopher Lloyd. ‘Like several other fleshy-rooted plants that increase by root cuttings, acanthus dislike being moved, are slow to settle down, but once established are difficult to eradicate.’ So maybe it will get going given time.

Like you I am enjoying a sudden surge of fresh colour. Great stuff! I keep coming across that KNM in various places – I think it is calling to me! But where is a good location for it? Oh no, it’s that time of year when SOS starts tempting me into all sorts of purchases. Dennis hasn’t shown up here yet but fully expect it this afternoon. So lovely to see things starting to come through. I share your view of the acanthus. There’s one in our new garden that I’ve left in, with visions of a spreading plant and huge flower spikes. So far it’s just a spindly, floppy mess. Also I think they can be terrible seed-setters. Good luck with Dennis. It’s pelting down here and very windy woo. Here’s mine for today

The KNM buds look so delicate. I hope they’ve the sense to stay put for a while. I’ve not tried the variegated Acanthus but my experience with the plain leaved variety was along the lines of ‘wow, those leaves are amazing, wow, look at those flowers, wow, that’s getting to be quite a large clump, wow, how far can one plant spread in a couple of seasons, omg, will I ever be able to get rid of this plant’.

Mild weather? Not down here! The temperatures may be warmer for the time of year, but it has been windy pretty much all week and that wind had teeth! Monday and Tuesday here were worse for wind and rain than the weekend was and Dennis arrived early yesterday bringing yet more wind and rain…
So from a soggy Cornwall you’re only getting one flower, but six or so photos! Sorry!

Your crocus are just amazing, and the ones growing in the lawn certainly provide a nice splash of colour there! I’m not familiar with Prunus KNM, but what a lovely blush of pink on those buds. I wish my plain Acanthus was a thug; it seems to be battling here in my garden, yet friends about 1 km away have a nice healthy specimen, with flowers!

Nice to see the crocus flowering up. Got a bit longer to wait on mine. I’ve been considering the Prunus kojo no mai but just picked up a large bargain Acer so that may be filling the space I’d had in mind.
This week more irises, charity finds, bin tidies, cow slips and the start of my dahlias.

An acer is a fine substitute for a knm. I bought both of my kojos in the sale last year or year before. Bargain.

They’ve been regular discounts for them online, but the Acer is a decent metre and a half size, so adding a good block in one go.

Your plants and seedling are well into growth mode. Beautiful little crocus, and the Prunus kojo no mai is going to be awesome very soon. Let’s hope your weather remains mild so that it can shine.
As for your alliums – they’re way ahead of mine, I have only two starting to peek through, and not a sign of life from those in the borders.
But weather overall has been dreadful here, we managed to plant some snowdrops, but for Six on Saturday, I’ve focussed on the summer garden for this week. I really cheered me up! 😁

The micro shots of the crocus are spectacular – they’re even more beautiful up close than far away. You mentioned last year your disappointment in the Bear’s Britches, which is the same variegated type as mine, bought last year. The other BBs I’ve lived with were thugs after the first year, so hopefully these will perform better this summer. If not, I’m going to try your pot suggestion & see what happens. Can’t wait to see your fancy tulips again this year. https://lorahughes.blogspot.com/2020/02/stormy-weather.html

Lovely crocus selections Jonathan, all that back-breaking planting rewarded. I’m not a fan of acanthus I’m afraid. Many years ago I visited Spain and saw a whole load of them growing like weeds on scrubland. It put me off despite how splendidly architectural they are (when they flower!).
I’m going small and dainty this week with a few pretty flowers growing outdoors and in the greenhouse.

You’re better being underwhelmed by the variegated Acanthus than overwhelmed by the unvariegated version. There is no getting rid of that beast. Are flower seedlings more interesting than veg seedlings? I suppose because most veg are quick and reliable they don’t seem as exciting as the random world of flowery stuff when it germinates. Mine are not very creative this week. I just got pictures of a few flowers that happen to be blooming now. I happen to like what looks like a flowering plum. I also wanted to show off the one good hellebore because I have been telling others that they do not do very well here. They really don’t, except for the one specimen in my #6 picture.
I know I already asked about the alliums getting potted first, but they still seem odd like that. I would so want to put them directly out in the garden.
If it is any consolation. I have noticed the same with the variegated acanthus. The common sort gets to be rather invasive. A variegated specimen was added years ago, but has gone nowhere. It produces about the same few leaves annually, without getting any bigger. I have never seen it bloom.

Potted the alliums for 2 reasons, one so I can see where to plant them when the perennial regrowth starts, I can see where the gaps are. 2nd, cos i lost the will to live planting everythingnelse, much quicker to pot them up! I’ll pay for that in a few weeks time when i plan them…
