My gardening interest levels remain in the doldroms, and I spent yesterday lunchtime putting up our outside lights (I finally caved this year in the case of 2020’s unending gloom). That combination dealt a fatal blow to my Six on Saturday photo taking so I’ve reached for the photo album to find pictures from the last few years, all around this time of year.
1 – Snowman! This time last year we had a decent fall of snow. It didn’t stick around for long, but certainly long enough for this chap to be constructed.
2 – Seed drawers. It’s been a long while since I got my drawers out, as it very much were. Made over the holidays a few years ago, these are still brightening a corner of the shed.
3 – Compost heap construction. This is from last year, I think, but could easily be from today, the heap is in a similar condition. Last year’s batch is depleted after being used for tubs of tulips and other container filling. I have quite the pile of cardboard stashed for layers of browns once I get constructing again. It’s tricky to find sufficient green material this year, I might have to pop to the brewery and grab a few bags of spent hops, or to the stables for some manure. If they’ll let me in this pandemic madness.
4 – Allium seedheads. This was from the gardens of the American Museum near Bath where Mrs P and I spent a weekend around this time last year.
5 – Tidy pots. A rare sight, neatly organised pots in their drawer. I no longer bother washing them out, just knock the old compost out and store till next time. I have lots and lots of pots…
6 – Pansy. Another one that could easily have been from this year but isn’t.

I’m a newcomer this year to Six on Saturday. Excellent. The last time I went down to the Allotment, a couple of weeks ago, was to finish digging out an old BLACKCURRANT BUSH, inherited from my predecessor…and I’ve had the plot 20 years. The digging hole had filled up with water, and I was slipping around dangerously for ankles and wrists. Do you know what, it’s time to leave gardening alone and embrace winter walks and photography.

I enjoyed looking at your ‘old’ photos Jon and like everyone else especially admire your seed drawers. Seems ages since we had sufficient snow for a snowman but maybe it was only a couple of years ago – not that one would necessarily be appearing if we did! What a massive number of pots, and such organisation, I’m low on pots because a lot left during a plant sale, I’m left with lots of large ones. I’d love to visit the American Museum garden when I can do so. Do you have many house plants? Or tender plants in the house? I enjoy looking after them at this time of year. Oh my, I can FEEL your doldrums from here! But, you bring so much good cheer and happiness with the presentation of this blog! I enjoy and look forward to hearing from you and all the others every week! We’re like family! I like the snowman, snow is something we rarely see here and I am jealous of the seed drawers! Are they mod-poged, or whatever that technique, is where you layer bits of colored paper over each other and then seal it? I have been busy writing about Norway again this week, (I may never be out of Norway) and my garden is a bit dull right now so no SOS today, but I wanted you to know I was thinking about you! See you next week, even though I’ll be on the road!

Same. My garden is a mud pit right now, and there aren’t five things flowering in the greenhouse. I started a bunch of gesneriad and bulb seeds, but nothing has sprouted so far.
My six are a little garden project and some wildlife that we saw in the garden this year.

Good afternoon. Grannysgardenhimindoors and I are back from trudging and paddling around the golf course this morning. I think we will wait until it dries out before we go again……too wet and muddy. Interesting to see a snapshot(s) of previous years. Occasionally, Google reminds me of “the same time as last year” and, much to my surprise, there were hollyhocks and roses then. The seed chest is a thing of beauty which cannot fail to cheer you up on a grey day like today. I find the rows of ready pots very admirable too, and I’m now disappointed that I don’t have a drawer to to put mine in all neat like that. I confess to spending almost no time in the garden this week, something I was intending to rectify this weekend. But the weather looks like its not going to play ball.

I rather like your post this week, gleaned from previous ones. I think if I had such beautiful drawers, they would be in my study! Does the corrugated cardboard disintegrate completely? If so there will be even less recycling to put out. The American Museum is indeed a fabulous place to visit and shall be going again this year to check out how the garden is progressing. Thank you for making the effort to post despite your gardening doldrums. We can all have a week off if we fancy but you’re always there to hold us together. I love your drawers – I remember seeing the cut up catalogues on twitter. It’s just so jolly. Enjoy your winter lights – I’m still resisting but have plenty of decorations indoors.
This week I have been planting and moving shrubs and roses so prepare yourself for some underwhelming photos. But each one is packed with potential.

Yes, a rather dull time of the year and getting out to the garden has been a challenge this week but we managed two half days and got a little done. The snowdrops are coming into season with a few good clumps putting on a show and others are showing lots and lots of snouts so the display will get better and better with each passing week. Christmas, decorations etc etc is organised and we are allowing ourselves to slip into the spirits a little earlier this year.

Hope you get your mojo back. I managed to get out this week to pot up a rose and finishing off a hanging basket today. Feel better for getting back on with things. Got a lot of seedlings that need potting on. Still got some bulbs to go but feel better motivated to get on with it.
