Here we go again, Autumn already, meterologically speaking. I managed to get my bulb order done during the week, much later than in recent years. I was fearing stock shortages but that wasn’t at all evident with my supplier of choice, Parkers Wholesale. Once again I have bought lots of bulbs, about 800, and once again I will HATE planting them. It’ll be worth the hassle. Probably.
Six on Saturday then, you know the drill. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Lychnis coronaria, seedhead. Evidence of lack of deadheading, this will probably mean my lawn if full of lychnis seedling next spring.

2 – Eupatorium purpurea, ‘Joe Pye Weed’. I was underwhelmed with this in the back garden, now I’m underwhelmed with it in the rear garden. It looks a lot nicer very close up than it does as a garden plant. I think this is a weak version that didn’t come true from seed. I was expecting a much more purple flower, this is barely pink. I’m going to dig it up.

3 – Hydrangea ‘Annabel’. Mainly white over the summer, but turning green as she heads in to her Mrs Haversham phase.

4 – Japanese anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’. This clump has done particularly well this year for some reason. They are upright, tall and flowering profusely.

5 – Rose ‘The Pilgrim’. My repeat flowering roses are revving up for another go around. First to flower has been the Pilgrim here, just one so far, but lots more to come.

6 – Nasturtiums, sprawling. These are the descendents of some seeds I bought years ago. Every year more grow, then drop seed, which then grow again. I originally bought them to climb up a fence, but now they just sprawl through and over everything in this border. I don’t mind for a while then they start to take over. Eventually I get fed up with them and pull them out.

Those are my Six for this week, what are yours? If you’d like to join in just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be spiffing. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a super weekend, don’t forget to check back later as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
Late again! Saturday completely got away from me, but I did take the photos on Saturday. https://dameeleanorhull.wordpress.com/2021/09/05/six-on-sss-sunday/
Jon and I overlap with Annabelle and Honorine, and I probably have some Joe Pye weed out in the wild patch, since it’s native to my area.

Eupatorium is underwhelming here, too, where it is native. I bought one from a native plant nursery displaying at the local farmer’s market years ago, and it survived for better than 5 years. Since it disappeared, I’ve not made an effort to replace it. While the plant is a bit weedy (to my eye, at least) it attracts a huge variety of insect traffic here. It is entertaining, if you enjoy watching a variety of bees and wasps arrive to feed on it. Happy to see your beautiful rose blooming again.

It is definitely September, and the garden is changing as the days grow shorter. Have a great week! -WG

Nicely done. Joe Pye is native where I am from and are usually darker in color than those. Have you seen Ironweed? Another Southeast US native. It is huge and purple. Anyway, 800 Bulbs! Yikes. Here is mine, thank you for hosting. https://theshrubqueen.com/2021/09/04/six-on-saturday-frogs-and-fun/

‘Joe Pye Weed’ must be a relative to my wild Eupatorium cannabinum, it looks exactly the same. I hate it, though it has attracted butterflies in the past. I saw Eupatorium purpureum in a garden last week which is much better behaved and a much nicer colour. I suspect what you have is the wild variety. I love your white JA – the white ones are so pretty at this time of the year, adding that touch of light to the garden. I don not envy you planting 800 bulbs, though to be honest I haven’t counted how many I have ordered this year.

Yes it could well be, seed came from a plant soc thing, notorious for iffy naming. It’s for the high jump.

Squeaking into Saturday, ha ha! The anemone and rose are lovely. What a commitment those bulbs are, but I can sort of see why you do it. When they flower, they’re so rewarding đŸ™‚

My bulbs are long ordered and now, of course, I’m forgetting where I had planned to plant them…I usually write these things down somewhere. Although I’ll be safe planting them wherever I had tulips since the chipmunks seem to have found most of those since the spring. No more tulips! I’m off for a 15 km run now – have a great weekend!

Morning! I love the detail on the Lychnis seed pod. Annabel is a gorgeous green. Is that a snail I see peeping out from behind a petal? Hope it is not after those pretty bracts! Wow! 800 bulbs to plant! I cannot even comprehend that task! Good luck with planting them out!

Seriously, should you even try to deadhead lychnis coronaria? I am really asking this, I just look at mine and think ‘too much effort’! But then again it doesn’t look a bit sad at the moment. I keep thinking about Joe Pye Weed – but dull and a favourite of the s&s does not sound attractive! Here’s my link https://wp.me/p97pee-Sb with a little rant about weeds!

I do love The Pilgrim, not only a lovely flower but one with happy memories for me. Annabel is a beauty, I becoming more and more fond of hydrangeas. Glad you got your bulbs sorted, I hate planting them too but as you say, it is probably worth it. Here are mine https://offtheedgegardening.com/2021/09/04/six-on-saturday-turn-right/

I could have been playing ‘snap’ with some of your items this week: repeat flowering roses, nastutiums, and Anemone, which I agree with you are doing well this year. Instead I have gone with a different ‘family’, I wonder whether you could have played snap with mine.https://noellemace.blogspot.com/2021/09/six-on-saturday.html

Good morning. Aren’t you running today? Saving that for tomorrow? Nice nasturtiums, where are your blackfly? Roses are such good value and nice among other plants rather than in a specific rose bed.

‘Honorine Jobert’ is a success in the mother’s garden. Anemones a little taller than the one I have here but the colour is really bright. 800 bulbs! A chore for you and we will see the result of course. Have a nice weekend

Her Mrs Havisham phase, what an apt description (I didn’t think of anything as literary for my fading Hydrangea paniculata, but have a very similar photo to yours, only the colours are different). I think you should find a child or teenager wanting to earn a bit of pocket money to plant those 800 bulbs for you! Enjoy my late summer flowers. I got an anemone also. It is not much to look at, but it proves that it can be happy here. I am getting to like it, although pale.
Your picture of Joe Pye weed shows the bland color that you mentioned earlier. I sort of get it now, although I would be pleased to try any Joe Pye weed for the first time. Your anemone is of course prettier than mine. Mine is too pale to be a good pink, but is not white either. It is just sort of . . . pallid. It works.

Great photo of the hydrangea. It looks fascinating in close up. I’ve yet to see whether my Eupatorium has disappointing flowers as the S&S have decided to go for it, which I wasn’t expecting at all. It has just 6 inches of slime trailed holey leaves. Not a great plant purchase. I have high hopes for my new hydrangea though in this weeks Six.

I’m so sick of slugs and snails this year. I might have a new rule, any new plants must be of zero interest to our slimy friends.

Rose Pilgrim is a beauty and a Hydrangea that turns from white to green rather than pink sounds refreshing. I have got to the marking bulbs in catalogues stage but ordering has yet to commence. I too hate planting bulbs. 800 would send me over the edge… or the hedge https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2021/09/04/six-on-saturday-4-september-2021/

To be fair the majority will go in pots and containers, a quicker business than planting in the ground.

I’ve been digging out the lynchnis lawn seedlings. But the lawn is filled with more seedlings round the edge then grass with forget-me-nots, geraniums and more trying to claim it as border. I still need to get on with my bulb order. Not sure what I’m going with yet as rearranging the borders.
This week’s six comes from the in-laws and their beautiful garden.
