Last weekend I got a bit done in the garden. I fought the good fight with bindweed and other plantona-non-grata, I mowed and edged the lawn, I watered containers, I thought about getting the irrigation system out of hibernation, I tied things in, I fed the roses. You know, stuff. Not sure how much gardening I’ll get done this weekend, there’s a fair bit of running on the menu. Never mind, let’s do Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide!
Here are my Six for this week…
1 – Dahlias, growing. I bought a few new ones, and I have successfully re-animated some dried out husks I never quite grew properly last year, and even one or two I accidentally dug up in the garden a couple of weeks ago. Dahlias are a pain in the backside, but hopefully good for some late summer blooms. I might re-pot these in 3L pots to give them a chance to grow on.

2 – Clematis ‘The President’. I have a few of these, most from cuttings from the first. This one is growing with another in the rose planters down the side of the house.

3 – Rose ‘Dr Eikener’. I’m not certain which flowered first, this or ‘Danse de Feu’ but I have a hunch is was Herr Doktor here. A fragrant, thorny rose, he is growing in the aforementioned planters down the side of the house.

4 – Rodgersia podophylla ‘Instow’ – I recently moved this in a bit of Lilac border re-arranging. It seems to be doing very well, it looks like it will produce lots of good stems with the impressive leaves. Perhaps it will even flower this year.

5 – Melianthus major. I grew this from seed last year, and two others like it. They have been languishing in too-small 1L pots in the greenhouse. I finally planted two of them, one in the corner of the Wisteria border, one in the front garden. The photo shows new growth from the ground, so I am hopeful they will grown on nicely now.

6 – Tulips. Two for the price of one, the purple is ‘Gorilla’, the other is, I think, ‘Cummins’. Frilly!

I might still have tulips in a presentable state next week, we shall see. If you’d like to have a go, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be splendid. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a great weekend in the garden, I hope you get some good spring sunshine, and perhaps some convenient, useful overnight rain.
I’ll be back next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
It’s still Saturday in my time zone, so here are mine: https://dameeleanorhull.wordpress.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-8/ I love your clematis and rose!

It can be a tiny bit frustrating as all of those (mundane) garden jobs you mentioned are so much work, and yet not picture worthy! such a waste. But good job for getting them done.
I *love* The President clematis. wow. What a powerful color. I have yet to find a protected enough spot in the garden for clematis…
Here’s my six!

Great choice of six this week, I think the tulips will be over by next weekend. I’ve just scraped in this week, had to include the Echium and other favourites:https://kasmaty.blogspot.com/2022/05/sixonsaturday-echium-envy.html

Good luck with the Dahlias. Enjoy dahlias too but do take some looking after. Special Six on Saturday from me this week, yes it is late too.

Why on earth would someone name a tulip ‘Gorilla’?! Thanks for hosting, Jon, and your style of writing, which I always enjoy. My six are here: https://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-distractions/

That’s a beautiful rose, whatever it’s name is. In my garden I’ve been watching the season changing from late to early spring with tiny signs of summer and autumn

Lovely as ever! Love the purple clematis! I have to get out into the garden and dig up some encroaching weeds and see about some straw bales, so I will have to come back to this later to enjoy everyone else’s posts! Here are my six! The goslings were technically from Tuesday, but I was only there a couple of days, and they were so cute! https://wisconsingarden.wordpress.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-may-7-2022/

What lovely flowers you have this week! You’re ahead of my on the Dahlias- mine haven’t met soil yet. On the ‘to-do’ list still…. But here are my Six for Mother’s Day weekend. Cheers! WG

Wonderful flowers, love that Clematis and the tulips. Best of luck with the irrigation project..https://theshrubqueen.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-happy-returns/

That clematis is a bobby dazzler! Not sure I could have a tulips with the Cummings name, though I quite like the frilliness. My tulips are all pretty much over, I have just been out watering the containers and cutting the stems down in the hope that I might get some to flower again next year! Most likely a waste of time. I actually sowed Dahlia seeds last year, they didn’t grow much, but I overwintered the pots and now they have started to shoot again. They’ll go into a container though so I can keep a watch for the S&S and earwigs… probably another waste of time…

The frilly edges of the tulips look fantastic. Thanks for sharing:) I came across this ‘Six on Saturday’ last week and had a lot of fun looking at everyone’s contributions. Here is my first! https://onemorethyme.art.blog/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-7-may-2022/

I like that pairing of frilly, pink tulips! Your clematis is ahead of mine. Lucky you! I’ve always had trouble keeping melianthus going in the ground here (probably too wet over winter), so I wish you well with your seedlings.

Love the deep shade of the clematis. And you are absolutely correct, dahlias are a pain, but worth it when all goes well. Here is what is going on for me right now: https://aftereden.blog/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-7-may-2022/

Good afternoon. A sunny day here and with some rain last night maybe I can scratch the surface of the soil……..or maybe not. Lovely tulips still, most unusual petals. Hope the running goes well.

The tulips are lovely, and the colour of the president is lovely too. I have always wanted to grow a Melianthus for its silvery foliage, but it is far too large for my tiny garden. The rose bud is particularly pretty.

Love both of the Tulips. I must cut my Melianthus back – very late doing so.

It has been dry here in the sunny Southeast USA. Our usual hazy, humid summer weather is creeping in. A cooler front moved in yesterday bringing breezy weather but only a sprinkle of rain. I have had to turn on the irrigation and water the outside containers.
Today, I have some natives to show and tell.
Happy gardening and thank you propagator for the tulips and roses.

The side of your house must be a sun trap and be looking very good atm! Roses here are still on the verge of opening. Drums fingers impatiently. The clematis is a great colour. Here’s my six with a few for the shadier spots. https://n20gardener.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-on-the-cusp-of-good-things/ Have a good weekend.

Morning! Sounds like you had a very productive time in the garden last weekend!
I’ve focused on the stiff that’s waiting in the wings this week…

I have a plant of ‘The President’ buried deep in my Holboellia, clearly I must try to propagate it. I have Dahlias in the ground trying to come up but getting slugged, I’m tempted even now to put them in pots just for a couple of weeks then put them back. As you say, they are a pain, but totally worth it once they get going. Here are mine:

Morning all – it’s so dry here! Good to see the Dahlias – they are a pain but they do repay it, don’t they? Anyway, my six https://peerlessgardening.wordpress.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-7-5-2022/

Very impressed with your Clematis from cuttings, what a super colour it is! I grow my Melianthus in a pot as it wouldn’t like my heavy soil, I cut it back each year and it soon puts out it’s gorgeous foliage again.

Gorgeous clematis, and I’ve never tried growing them from cuttings. I will have to give it a go some time. I see you have roses in flower too. They seemed early to me, but perhaps yours usually appear around now.
The dahlias are a lot of faff, but once they are flowering their socks off late in the Summer I know I wouldn’t want to be without them.

Dahlias….can’t decide whether to keep going with mine or not after this year’s diseases. Will see! Lovely tulips. Here are my autumnal six.

Melianthus major looks like blue elderberry in this picture. I am unfamiliar with it, but I believe that it was one of the trendy plants for the landscapes of the original Eichler homes. Such plants were weird and ‘modern’ and the time, and suited the architecture well.

Totally impressed that you have your own propagated clematis and such a beauty to boot. Enjoy the running and when you put your feet up, you may have time to read my Six on Saturday this week: https://noellemace.blogspot.com/2022/05/six-on-saturday-pleasing-border.html

I love the colours of your rose and Clematis. I potted up my dahlias far too keenly early in Spring and had to plant them out in the garden this week because they were climbing out of the conservatory. I am hoping the slugs and snails keep off with the dry soils at the moment. Here’s my six https://wp.me/p2Eu3u-i49

It’s nice to see dahlias and rodgersia at the same stage as mine. By cons, no rose here because there, it lacks a lot of rain. Regarding the melianthus, do you plan to dig it up for next winter or leave it and protect it? I had tried to leave it in the garden and it failed. I have to start over. https://fredgardenerblog2.wordpress.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-07-05-22/

It should be OK in the ground here. A thick layer of leaves over it should be enough. We’ll see!

That’s a smashing rose and I may have to add Cummins to my bulb order later in the year. My wife foolishly requested a new Clematis for our garden despite my woeful track record with them and one has been purchased – poor, doomed thing https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2022/05/07/six-on-saturday-7-may-2022/

They are fickle. They either do very well or fail to thrive.

I am having all sorts of problems with WordPress today (problem almost certainly in chair not in computer). My first comment posted before I’d finished editing! Everything about your post today is fabulous – that clematis is beautiful. Jealous of your rodgersia success – mine will not do for me at all. Thanks for sharing, have a great weekend.
