Another week of hot (for the UK) weather with no rain and added stress to plants, shrubs and trees. There’s now also talk of hosepipe bans to add to the fun. Sigh. Well, let’s do Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide!
Here are my Six…
1 – Hibiscus ‘Marina’. I saw many hibiscus in flower when I was in France, cursing the fact that I was probably missing prime flowering season on my one and only hibiscus shrub. Sure enough there were many spent blooms when I got back, and it was suffering from the lack of water. It is still trying to produce some flowers though, can’t fault it for trying. This one isn’t fully open – I’m not sure it it’s coming or going.

2 – The green green grass of home. Without the all important green. “Straw” is the dominant colour round these parts. There are rumours of downpours next week, which would revive things (after flattening them I expect) but I shan’t hold my breath.

3 – Aster frikartii ‘Monch’. Underwhelming this year to aforementioned dryness. Still, putting on a bit of a show.

4. Telekia seed heads. Desperate for some evidence of interest, I’m leaning once more on the telekia.

5. Nasturtium. Every year I complain a bit about this taking over the boarder and setting seeds for its inevitable return, but it’s hard to get to cross with it. I will eventually pull it all out.

6 – Eurybia divaricata, white wood aster. Seems to be coping well in the shade.

Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to take part, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours, that would be splendid. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
I hope you have a productive gardening weekend!
I’ll be be back next time for another #SixOnSaturday.
After publishing this yesterday, I completely forgot to add it to your comments! As ever, thanks for hosting, here are my 6: https://onemorethyme.art.blog/2022/08/13/six-on-saturday-13-august-2022/
Like yourself we have had little rain (unusual in Scotland) but I believe it is supposed to break today. Your white wood Aster looks lovely. White in a shady corner is always appealing:)

GREAT SIX! Some of the plants here are starting to fizzle out while others are just beginning to bloom. It’s been a while since I posted a Six on Saturday, but I decided to join the fun this week.

I’m sorry your drought is ongoing, and hope it will break soon. I’d be happy to have self-seeding nasturtiums, but I guess we always want what we haven’t got. As so often, I’m posting on Sunday your time, but still Saturday in mine. Best wishes to all! https://dameeleanorhull.wordpress.com/2022/08/13/six-for-saturday-the-13th/

I wasn’t going to do six on Saturday today because I’m despondent about having to let the plants in borders die, however a look round the garden, and I found a few things to say something about, so here they are: http://kasmaty.blogspot.com/2022/08/sixonsaturday-oh-go-on-then.html

We have had clouds appearing unexpectedly today – hugely exciting! Doesn’t seem to have made any difference to tomorrow’s forecast though… My post is at https://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com/2022/08/13/six-on-saturday-keeping-up-appearances/

The hibiscus is a pretty colour, it should like the sun, I always associate them with warmer climates. My herb bed is usually overrun with nasturtiums but for some reason this year there is hardly any. I am sure I wasn’t that conscientious in removing all the seeds. I’m seeking the shade this week. Maybe I should have added a photo of my lawn which is still green! It needs mowing, but I figure that might not be a good idea at the moment.

Beautiful coloured Hibiscus. I’ll confess now and say that, like the Under-Gardener, I’ve sneaked in a seventh.

Hope you get some rain! We have been blessed this year with ample rain, so things look pretty fresh here. The vegetables are coming in well now, but there is a chill in the air that reminds me that Autumn will soon be upon us. Here are my six:

Here in the American South we are having expected temps with an adequate amount of rain. Hope you return to the normals you are forecast to have next week. It is disconcerting to see your plants struggle.
Here are my offerings for this week.

Inspired by one of your previous posts I decided not to weed my wood asters this year. A weed is just a native wildflower. They really are lovely. https://pruneplantsow.wordpress.com/2022/08/13/sixonsaturday-august-13th-musings-and-meanderings/

It seems that the grass has had a green colour over time in Europe … at least we know it because here it’s still green there. You managed to show us pretty flowers. It will be the surprise next week for me…. https://fredgardenerblog2.wordpress.com/2022/08/13/six-on-saturday-13-08-22/

Ah, Jon. Your lawn reminds me so much of ours when we used to have hot summers a lifetime ago. It’d be 3-4 years since we had a drought summer. Anyway – mustn’t grumble. Here’s my six. And thank you for hosting. https://pruebatten.com/2022/08/13/sos-130822/

I had assumed that wood aster would hate this dryness, but yes it’s the shade that seems to be the important bit! Fingers-crossed for rain next week. Looks like we’ve got three chances.

Morning all! Wishing you all a happy Saturday. Here’s my six (actually, seven, cheating!) https://notesfromtheundergardener.wordpress.com/2022/08/13/six-on-saturday-13th-august-2022/ Looking forward to catching up on everyone’s posts later, sat in the shade with a long cool drink!

Yep, scorchio again. Tantalising hints of rain to come but like you not holding my breath. I nearly added in my (your) eurybia this week. It is doing very well in the shade. Good to see you have some lovely colour where you are. Half my lawn is brown and half is green where we have an underground stream so there must be water down there still. Do we plant for drought or for the floods that I get every winter?

I see the Met Office has us under a thunderstorm warning for monday. Should I put every pot and pan out to catch the last drop, or brace myself for disappointment? I have a Hibiscus doing very little, Marina is a lovely blue. Here are mine: https://wp.me/p6bCCa-3rr

Good morning. My grass looks just like yours but, apparently, it will recover. Pretty hibiscus and the asters are doing well in spite of the heat, as you say.

Oh what a shame that the grass has died! I’m really hoping for your sake that there is rain for the garden next week before there is a hosepipe ban in place! The Hibiscus is pretty, although you do not see many plants with that colour flower around here. Nasturtiums are the saviour flowers in dry hot gardens here, just adding bright patches of colour and hope! I too like the wood aster. My Six is a mixed bag this week, and the link to it is here: https://hairbellsandmaples.com/2022/08/13/six-on-saturday-w33-2022-projects-old-new/

The grass isn’t dead, just “resting”. It’ll be back when it rains.

With no requirement for lawn moving you still have limited deck chair time, given that there is watering to do. Your nasturtiums are just a bright addition, I love them! Here are my six: https://noellemace.blogspot.com/2022/08/six-on-saturday-drought-episode.html

That’s a lovely Aster. I really need a few more of those. My Hibiscus is also struggling in this heat, although it’s faring better than the Viburnums. A dodgy rhyming Six on Saturday today: https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2022/08/13/six-on-saturday-a-rhyming-one-13-august-2022/

I am sorry that the weather is so difficult there. I read about it elsewhere, but find that it does not seem so dreadful by our standards. Of course, this is why there are so many plants that you grow there that we can not grow here. They would not be happy with our climate.
My cannas have been enjoying the summer weather here, which is about the same as your unpleasant heat. They would only prefer more humidity. I sometimes hose them to make them more comfortable.

My white wood aster seem to be doing well this year. Had a small pot given to me a few years back and now spread to a decent point. I return home tomorrow to see how good a job neighborhood have done watering.

I’ve been so sorry to hear of the drought and heat so many are having. A french gardener I follow also mentioned wildfires. We can relate here in Northern California. Second or third year in drought–I’m loosing track. Last summer we carried buckets everywhere to try to keep trees alive. We finally got a water cart on wheels. I hope you get that forecasted rain! I’m impressed that your nasturtiums are hanging in there. What a pretty hibiscus. Nice to have blues and purples when it’s hot and/or dry. The curly petals of the telekia make me smile. I’ve never grown that. Thanks for hosting these! It must be a lot of work to manage it all! Do you ever get tired of doing it? Sending gratitude. Oh… my post… it may look green in the photos, but the fields look same as your grass. ~lisa https://the-compulsive-gardener.com/2022/08/12/summer-garden-butterflies-pruning-winter-squash-hand-pollinating-corn-saving-seeds/
