The final Six for 2018! I think I am right in saying that I have not missed a week this year so that’s 312 vignettes (mostly) from my garden for your delight and delectation. It does get trickier as the year comes to a close to find six things to share. Tricky, but not impossible, no excuses! Time for the last Six of this year then – Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything – a tool, a completed project, a flower (good luck with that!), wildlife, anything at all. Join in!
Here are my Six.
1 – New Okatsune secateurs. I was able to drop a suitably heavy and quite specific hint to Mrs P that I might be very pleased to receive these for Christmas. They have a heft to them that none of my many previous secateurs had. Having used them today, I can report that they make a very satisfying thwok sound when used to cut a stem of, say, wisteria.
2 – Wisteria, 2nd prune. To get the best from a wisteria they need to be pruned twice, one around mid-summer, to 5 buds, and once around now to 2 buds. This should ensure a good floral display next spring. Mine has got very unruly since the summer prune and it took quite a seeing-to to return some semblance of order.

3 – Shed decoupage. Picking up where we left off last Christmas, my youngest daughter and I spent some time yesterday beautifying my shed. The seed drawers and the workbench got this treatment last year and now the interior walls are taking their turn. I have been saving all the free seed and plant catalogues that appear during the year, they were sacrificed to this noble cause. I have enough left to do maybe two more panels of the shed like this one. Very straightforward to do, if a little time consuming – a perfect holiday activity.
4 – Iris versicolour, emerging. I grew these from seed this year. Until quite recently this year’s growth was still green but as you can see it has faded away, but next year’s growth is already on its way. I wonder if they will flower next summer?
5 – Clematis montana, naked. I was sure that this clematis should be evergreen, but either this one has bucked the trend, or I am mistaken. It is certainly doing a good impression of being deciduous, not a leaf is left. On the plus side, it is now easier to see what is tangled with what, so I have some hope of restoring some order to the training this winter before they leaf up again. I think I need a couple more runs of wire supports above the existing ones.
6 – Waiting Room 3. I have three cold frames which are presently all pressed into service as storage for plants of various kinds – some grown this year, some from cuttings this year and some bought in a pity-bench frenzy. Waiting Room 3 contains Rudbeckia ‘goldsturm’ (originally 2, divided on purchase into 3 plants each), campanula persicifolia (originally 1, divided on purchase into 4) and helenium ‘short n sassy‘ (originally 3, divided on purchase into 8). All should make excellent garden plants, so long as I can find room for them. A problem for the spring.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you feel inclined to share, just publish your post, pop a link to it in the comments below and perhaps mention my blog in yours. For more details and for other ways to participate, you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a great gardening weekend, don’t forget to check back in during the day as more links get added.
I’ll be back next year for another #SixOnSaturday.
You got some too?? I am very jealous now. The hints in the old house didn’t work although we don’t tend to buy many gifts so I may just have to save up for a pair for myself!
Happy new year to you. Xx

So impressed with so many being able to post in this crazy intermediate week before NY! Have loved reading them all and thank you, Propagator, and everyone else for teaching me so much about gardening thus far.
Looking forward to being part of SoS in 2019.
Happy New Year to everyone.

Hi Mr. P. A good six selection. I like the idea of the decoupage and what a wonderful way to ‘bond’ with daughter in your gardening man cave.
The clematis montana I grew in the UK and I remember it was deciduous 😦 I’ve not grown them here so no comment as to whether the leaf fall is related to climate.
I like your style dropping a hint the size of a boulder for your xmas gift. I should have done the same and got the kids to club together for a greenhouse. (for winter)

yes, we have been having fun. We did another panel of the shed wall today. It’s going to be bright in there!

Your shed is looking awesome. I remember admiring your seed storage container earlier too. You might find find yourself losing it in the camouflage though! I hope that your irises flower next year. They are certainly coming through good and strong already.

There’s something very satisfying about pots of greenery in a coldframe, all snuggled in together.

i need to find somewhere for all those plants, it will soon be time to sow seeds, if i’m not careful I’ll have nowhere to put plants to harden off.

I have shed envy, yours is clean and DRY and also very pretty. I too got new secateurs for Christmas after shoving the OH into a shop saying “those are nice” not as classy as yours, but they will do the job. I’m still too depressed by the wet to go outside and take photos, but I have noticed that the winter honeysuckle is flowering and the anemones are in full leaf, lots of bulbs poking through the soil too. Maybe next week I will have some photos to share.
Wishing you a prolific 2019 Prop!

Love the shed decoupage – great idea. I have a Clematis Montana in a pot and mine’s not evergreen either. It also doesn’t flower so I think I probably need to shift it somewhere it would be happier. Have so enjoyed your posts and even contributing a couple myself. I’ll aim to join in lots more in 2019.

Oh scrumptious looking secateurs, I’m awful looking after tools frequently leaving them outside (2019 resolution- put tools away!) Now I have my own allotment with its dinky shed I may well copy your decoupage idea, it looks great. This time of the year I particularly miss my garden and wonder if my shrubs are being looked after.
Another resolution is to blog more often and if it wasn’t for your SoS my blog would look sparse. Here is my SoS – Happy New Year 🥳 https://hurtledto60.com/2018/12/29/six-on-saturday-29-december-2018/

Seriously? None missed? I almost missed each of the last few, especially this one. I had no problem with the pictures, but got so terribly sick that I could not go out to find a wi-fi connections. Here they are anyway.
If I could get to them, I should send a picture of my 1985 Corona shears! I got them as a gift when I graduated from high school, and they were quite a status symbol while I was in college. They were some of the last that were still made in Corona! I retired them a few years ago, but still use them in home gardening.
Clematis montana happens to be one of the few clematis that does really well here. It is deciduous even in our mild climate, and has that ‘cold climate look’ to it. Okay, I don’t know how to describe it, but it looks like something from colder regions farther north. You know, it is sort of elegant.

Perhaps you should grow Clematis cirrhosa through your monatana, I don’t know if it would work but it’s evergreen. Mind your fingers with those secateurs. There are satisfying thwoks and there are very painful thwoks, I’ve tried it and I don’t recommend it. Here’s my end of year six: https://wp.me/p6bCCa-1K8

I can see how a finger could easily be removed, they are extremely sharp. I’ll need to be more than usually careful. I brushed my finger against the very tip of the blade, just the lightest of wafts, enough to part the skin and draw an impressive amount of blood. I consider them to be duly christened…

Loving the shed decoupage. Great idea. I’m surprised to find myself suffering from secateurs envy! They look top notch. My clematis montana is also naked (though it holds onto its leaves for a long time). I’m cheating a bit with my SoS this time… https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2018/12/29/six-on-saturday-looking-back-over-2018-29-december-2018/

The clematis montana of my in-laws is like yours, no leaves at the moment … nothing abnormal in my opinion.
I didn’t comment on Twitter but your daughter and you did a good job ! Enjoy, when she’s older, you probably will be alone to decorate the shed…good times to spend
Last point, the wisteria : nice job! I’m still waiting a little for mine (end of February in general)
