As predicted, zero gardening was achieved last weekend since were braving the arctic gales on the south coast. It was cold! We were forced, forced I say, to spend a lot of time in the cocktail bar at the hotel. this weekend I am not running much, we’re not going anywhere, and the weather doesn’t look too bad. I may actually get some gardening done. Talking of which, time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Box, still stuffed with bulbs despite planting some. Mostly tulips, some daffodils, still sitting there minding their own business in the dark interior of a box. I hope to swap one dark interior for another this weekend, most of them are destined for tubs. I have some time, so no excuses.
2. Rose hips. I’ve clearly been neglectful with my spent bloom removal, but my slapdash approach has been rewarded with colourful hips. Is this a message from the gardening gods?
3 – Canna, giving up the ghost. No, I canna believe it either. The leaves are blackened but not yet mush, and the seed pods are almost hedehoggian in their appearance. If the tulip planting doesn’t render me sofa-bound, I’ll cut some stuff back this weekend.
4 – Japanese painted fern, or something like that. Looking very colourful as it heads underground for the winter.
5 – Rose ‘Mme Alfred Carriere’. Alfie here is still blooming away, a few days into December. The stems have gone wild and they really need tying in. Before I can do that I need to put in some more vine-eyes and wires as she has already outgrown the first installment.
6 – Wild animal tracks. Down one side of the lawn (which didn’t get it’s final mow when it needed it, so will remain unkempt now till the spring), there is a track. I used to blame the kids for this, back and forwards with their bikes pre- and post-paper round, but those days are done for now. I now suspect the cats, ours probably, creatures of habit that they are, and ignorant of my carefully placed but not-so-direct path.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to have a go, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be excellent. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a great weekend, don’t forget to pop back later as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back in a week for another #SixOnSaturday.
