As predicted, zero gardening was achieved last weekend since were braving the arctic gales on the south coast. It was cold! We were forced, forced I say, to spend a lot of time in the cocktail bar at the hotel. this weekend I am not running much, we’re not going anywhere, and the weather doesn’t look too bad. I may actually get some gardening done. Talking of which, time for Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Box, still stuffed with bulbs despite planting some. Mostly tulips, some daffodils, still sitting there minding their own business in the dark interior of a box. I hope to swap one dark interior for another this weekend, most of them are destined for tubs. I have some time, so no excuses.
2. Rose hips. I’ve clearly been neglectful with my spent bloom removal, but my slapdash approach has been rewarded with colourful hips. Is this a message from the gardening gods?
3 – Canna, giving up the ghost. No, I canna believe it either. The leaves are blackened but not yet mush, and the seed pods are almost hedehoggian in their appearance. If the tulip planting doesn’t render me sofa-bound, I’ll cut some stuff back this weekend.
4 – Japanese painted fern, or something like that. Looking very colourful as it heads underground for the winter.
5 – Rose ‘Mme Alfred Carriere’. Alfie here is still blooming away, a few days into December. The stems have gone wild and they really need tying in. Before I can do that I need to put in some more vine-eyes and wires as she has already outgrown the first installment.
6 – Wild animal tracks. Down one side of the lawn (which didn’t get it’s final mow when it needed it, so will remain unkempt now till the spring), there is a track. I used to blame the kids for this, back and forwards with their bikes pre- and post-paper round, but those days are done for now. I now suspect the cats, ours probably, creatures of habit that they are, and ignorant of my carefully placed but not-so-direct path.
Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to have a go, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be excellent. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a great weekend, don’t forget to pop back later as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back in a week for another #SixOnSaturday.
“hedehoggian” ?? A quick search gave me no definition for this word…sounds positively malevolent…

Probably a word of my own devising. Like a hedgehog.

Despite the blackened appearance the slight colour remaining in the canna leaf makes for a great photo! Happy bulb planting this weekend! Apologies for being late! I was putting my post together last night when I realised I had forgotten to take a photo of the Eucomis! The post had to wait for completion until early this morning…. Finally got all my new bulbs planted last weekend, so today I had enough time for my first SoS since June!

Unusual seed heads and still plenty of planting to do. I see your cats avoid your carefully laid slabs. Ours steps from one to the next positioning his feet precisely on each.
WordPress is still not letting some of my comments get through. I will try to make it behave this week.

Well I wish you luck in doing any gardening today! Must be less windy and warm where you live than it is here where we are having frequent hailstones! Hope you manage to get those bulbs planted at least! Some of mine are already poking through.

The winter wildness of unmown lawns and plants running away and doing what they fancy is brilliant. I hope you get your bulbs planted. http://kasmaty.blogspot.com/2021/12/sixonsaturday-celebrating-vigour.html

Your header photo immediately made me think of a banana leaf but I’m not so far because it’s a canna! Great close up
You say that you will be able to garden this weekend but the weather is not necessarily favorable … Good luck with your bulb plantings! https://fredgardenerblog2.wordpress.com/2021/12/04/six-on-saturday-04-12-21/

I have carefully trained the neighbour cats not to come in the garden but walk along the fence and wall, but they know to keep a look out for me, so they wait till the curtains are drawn I am sure. Interesting to read that you leave your Cannas in the ground. Here is my contribution: https://noellemace.blogspot.com/2021/12/six-on-saturday-4-december-2021.html

Madame Alfred is irrepressible! Not so much the last rose of Summer, but the first rose of Winter. I’m happy to report that all my bulbs are in – well all the new ones. I’ve just remembered that there some of last years saved ones still hoping for a home. I hope the weather stays good for you and yours get planted OK.
Here’s my Six for this week. We’ve had snow already. Is it going to be a cold Winter?

Making rapid strides through the tulip planting this morning. Just 25 left, work of moments!

When I first saw the canna leaf I thought it was an arty shot of a landscape sweeping away to the horizon, how lovely it looks. One day I might be tempted by cannas but I fear I don’t have the space in the full sun section of the garden. Pots of them might be an idea, oh dear see how easy it is to be tempted! It’s a beautiful day and I hope you have the same. Here’s the link to my six https://wp.me/p97pee-WH

I have one lot of lily bulbs still to come, then it’s all over till Avon bulbs put their spring list up at the beginning of January and I can start again. That’s a brave, or foolish rose. I still have Cannas to lift, at this rate it won’t happen. Here’s my six: https://wp.me/p6bCCa-37c

I just left my cannas in the ground last year, they didn’t seem to mind.

Love the Canna seed pods, most of mine didn’t flower this year, not enough sun. Good luck with the bulb planting – I’ve mentioned my bulb planting battle this week as well.

Canna leaves look beautiful even when dying, nice photo, and cool seeds too. I also didn’t deadhead my rose and got some nice hips as a result, laziness can sometimes pay! Have a good Saturday, here are my 6: https://thenostalgicgardener.com/2021/12/04/december-thoughts-six-on-saturday-04-dec-21/

No Rhody this week; but there is someone silly for #6. She is thousands of miles away from your #6, so can not be blamed.

That fern is pretty and I’ve never seen the hedgehoggian seed pods of a canna before. Good luck with the bulb planting https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2021/12/04/six-on-saturday-4-december-2021/
