Don’t Panic! These soothing words adorn the cover of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and are also an encouragement to Captain Mainwaring. Of the two, I am more channelling Corporal Jones, as I realised just now that I still haven’t ordered my bulbs for next year. What! I normally have that done in early July. Will they still have what I want? Gaaagh. OK, breathe…
Time for Six on Saturday. Six things, on a Saturday. Could be anything, you decide. Join in!
Here are my Six for this week.
1 – Geranium ‘Crystal Lake’. A bit of a sprawler this one, but the flowers are rather pretty and it tolerates partial shade. This one is planted in the front of the shady border and seems to be doing OK.
2 – Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’. Brightening up a couple of my borders, I now have two quite large clumps of this. I think I will divide them in the spring, give them a bit more room. I generally don’t like yellow flowers, or at least certain shades of yellow, but goldsturm here is an exception for some reason.
3 – Poppy seed heads. The poppies are long gone but the decorative seed heads remain. They are chock full of seeds, each one probably enough for a garden full of poppies next year. I will sprinkle the seeds liberally and pull up any that are surplus to requirements.
4 – Begonia ‘Glowing Embers’. I had three of these last year and attempted to overwinter them. One was in a pot on the greenhouse floor, it died. Boo hoo. Two were in pots on a high shelf in the greenhouse, they both survived and are now flowering abundantly. Result. This winter I might do it properly, removing the tubers and storing them “properly”. Or I might not….
5 – Berberis thunbergii ‘Golden Rocket’. I’ve had this for a few years now and it is slowly growing into a worthwhile border plant, holding its own more with the thugs. I bought it for the foliage.
6 – Gladioli, pink one. The glads have been late to get going this year, or at least later than last year.
Those are my Six for this week, what are yours? If you’d like to have a go just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be splendid. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
I hope you have a fabulous gardening weekend, don’t forget to check back later as more links get added during the day.
I’ll be back next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
Sorry I’m late, the bus was delayed! I like the geranium ‘Crystal Lake’, never heard of that one before. Here are my six https://wordpress.com/post/davidsgardendiary.com/4208

That’s funny, as this is the first year that I ordered my bulbs early in the summer. I hope I don’t forget and order more again… Your Geranium ‘Crystal Lake’ is so lovely! I haven’t seen one like that before. And your gladiolas – wow! Gorgeous! and here I thought mine were nice. Two questions: how do you properly overwinter the begonia? and What is wrong with yellow plants? 🙂
Happy to join the meme! Here’s my link:

Lovely choices this week. You aren’t alone in not ordering fall bulbs yet. My favorite bulb supplier seems to have lost my account, so I’ll be starting from scratch. Congratulations on keeping your Begonias going for another summer. They are fussy, one year to the next. We are sweltering here in Williamsburg with another steamy day. So I’m writing about gardening in the shade. Here is my offering for the week: https://woodlandgnome.wordpress.com/2021/08/14/six-on-saturday-beating-the-heat/

That’s a pretty glad, the trouble here is that I forget to stake them until they are in bloom and then they are all sprawling at odd, gawky angles. Lovely rudbeckias, any daisy flower gets my approval.
And here are my six https://thebloominggarden.wordpress.com/.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend and perhaps some gardening.
Here’s my rather cryptic SOS this week…

Nice pink gladioli, Jon. I don’t like my ones. They seem to be gone in a matter of days.

Sprawling geraniums are a favourite of mine as they are great plants to cover the ground occupied by spring bulbs while their roots don’t invade the bulbs’ space; good companion plants.
Here I am a little late in the day – some of us have to do a bit of gardening! – with my weekly contribution: https://anirishgardener.wordpress.com/2021/08/14/a-week-of-three-gardens/

I do envy your Goldsturm, which has sadly never worked for me 🙄 And seeing your Glowing Embers really makes me think of ditching my dislike of begonias, as they are gorgeous and would look lovely in the Coop… My clematis do-gooders are here: https://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com/2021/08/14/six-on-saturday-doing-good/

Ah but I grow the tulips on pots on the patio and get rid of them after.

Hey! Those gladioli are beautiful. I only ever think of them as cut flowers to buy, but I guess someone must successfully grow them here too. I think they might be a bit beyond me. I have had my first success with anemone bulbs, and am enjoying them v much. Also really like your berberis — they’re a beautiful fresh green. https://onewordhere.blogspot.com/2021/08/six-on-saturday-2021-08-14-southern.html

Hi all,
Nice to see the summer colours this week, so vibrant and lush. That golden yellow rudbeckia is a delight. This week I have bees and butterflies to enjoy, as well as a long awaited completion of work to convert the Forest School co-op I volunteer with, into an officially recognised Charitable Benefit Society. https://doingtheplan.com/2021/08/14/sixonsat-buddleia-hydrangea-acorns-organisational-restructuring/

Nice, you made me remember two old favorites, Goldstrum Rudbeckia and the Poppy seedheads, wonderful! I am not sure I have ever seen a Begonia that color, wow. Are those Byzantine Glads? Here is my link. Thanks for hosting. https://theshrubqueen.com/2021/08/14/six-on-saturday-ahead-of-fred/

Daylily seeds times six. And then some more of the same. However the rudbeckia, poppies, larkspur, and lupine still manage to seed themselves in between.

That Glad is super! I think everything is 2-3 weeks behind this year. I grow the Acidanthera Murielae in pots, hoping there might be more than 2 flower spikes this year! And the Whistling Jacks in the garden which are long finished. I envy you your rudbeckia, my smaller variety only lasted the one season. If I see one in the garden centre I might buy it for late summer colour. Same price as a bunch of decent flowers. And you may get a bargain in the bulb section now.
I’m looking at the warmer shades this week:

That’s a beautiful gladiola! I don’t grow them but a neighbour gifted me a few stems in a vase yesterday. And Rudbeckia, of course, is a favourite!

Just back from a holiday looking at gardens in Suffolk, agree with you about Rudbeckia Goldsturm, it grows well in my garden, a great plant to split. I think the begonias are fine in pots over winter, I also have that one, great plant. Here are my holiday six: http://kasmaty.blogspot.com/2021/08/sixonsaturday-garden-tour-results.html

A very colourful selection from you, August is a colourful time don’t you think? The rudbeckias brings such colour to the borders and your begonia does too.

Isn’t your gladioli superb! Also your Rudbekias are looking fab, I’ve tried them but I had something eating and nibbling the petals, I would be punch drunk with happiness if they looked as good as yours.

I also have the rudbekias ‘Goldsturm’ and mine has twice as many petals and a bigger black heart ?? Maybe mine is from another badly labeled variety… Anyway, they’re very pretty and I’m happy with them.
Pretty orange begonias and this gladiolus is superb!

I’ve kept ‘Glowing Embers’ tubers for several winters now – well worth doing. Like you, I haven’t ordered bulbs yet – it must be the lack of summer weather spurring us on.

The Rudbeckia is also tolerated, perhaps even enjoyed, in this garden too. It’s strange how yellow can seem right sometimes and wrong other times.
I also seem to have forgotten to panic about the spring bulb buying. It seems so far away but the catalogues arrived ages ago.

I planted a very similar Berberis years ago and it hasn’t kept its fastigiate shape, in hindsight it’s a very good plant in the wrong place. Not so easy to move as perennials. I’ve lost Goldsturm twice, you’d think it would be bomb proof. Now, where can I squeeze in some gladioli? Here are mine: https://wp.me/p6bCCa-2XQ

Pleased to see a Berberis in there. The yellows have beautiful colourings in my opinion.
Just a bugger to prune….

Nice begonia, I have never grown any begonia but I am warming up to them. The are quite a large plant family aren’t they? Might try some next year as I am going to go for a more tropical look.
Also love the gladiolus, I have never grown any before but I really need to.

Good morning. I noticed my gladioli were a bit later this year too. Lovely, bright colours in your post, as usual. Meanwhile, Tuesday was probably the best August-weeding day since we moved here….the weeds were mostly coming up WITH their roots thanks to all that unseasonal rain. However, Wednesday was almost back to the concrete, summer soil.

Pretty geranium. I’m working through removing wargrave pink and relaxing with shorter less thuggish ones. I saw a few Berberis in Morrisons and was tempted. Tiny little plants but a good price. Did get a few bargain irises and grasses for work at 75p a pot.

‘Crystal Lake’ is a beauty and I really like the dark stems and golden foliage of the berberis. I’ve been ignoring the bulb catalogues on the coffee table, pretending autumn is way off. I better face up to reality https://thepropagatorblog.wordpress.com/2021/08/14/six-on-saturday-14-08-2021/

Except for #6, this is about one species, with only a single flower. I was pleased with it though. Major bragging rights about someone else’s perennial.
But I see that you got the real thing, or at least the fancier hybrid sort that most of us are familiar with. Gee, I do miss growing those.
