It’s spring, whichever definition you choose for the start time. We have been enjoying a sunny spell here in the south of England, glorious sunshine and some enjoyable warmth in the middle of the day. Not summer, far from it, but very pleasant indeed. The sun has brought on a spurt of growth in the garden, everything is kicking off. I managed to spend several hours out in the sunshine last weekend, in my shorts even, clearing away old growth, planting the last of the alliums (already growing well in little pots), mowing the lawn. General pottering really. I have managed, mainly through lack of opportunity rather than sheer willpower, to sow zero seeds this year. Last year was a disaster on that front, and I am going cold turkey this year. I did, however, buy some dahlia tubers that I need to pot up this weekend. I’m not that far gone.
Here are my Six for this week…
1 – Narcissus ‘Thalia’. The nun, or the penitent novice, bride maybe, of the daffodil world.

2 – Dwarf magnolia stellata. A little later than normal, but going gangbusters now. It smells fantastic, a nice greeting as one walks up the drive to the front door.

3 – Fatsia japonica. Fresh leaves looking lush in the spring sunshine.

4 – Narcissi jonquilla ‘Martinette’. On the opposite side of the front door to the magnolia, these are also rather jolly, with several blooms per stem. I think I could have planted more in here, although the roots of the clematis and the rose do limit space a bit.

5 – Fuchsia genii. As I walked down the patio steps on the hunt for photo-worthy specimens, I noticed this little be-potted shrub and it took me a minute to remember what it was. It didn’t do much in the first year, but last year it grew on a fair bit, so I am expecting a better show this year.

6 – Wallflower ‘Fire King’, maybe. I have a few of these dotted about, I think bought as bareroots a couple of years ago, or perhaps they were given to me. Anyway, the point is they are lovely.

Those are my Six, what are yours? If you’d like to join in, just publish your post and pop a link to it in the comments below. If you also mention my blog in yours that would be triffic. For more details you can read the brief participant guide.
Have a smashing weekend, I hope you get some gardening done while the sun still shines.
I’ll be back next weekend for another #SixOnSaturday.
Daffs enjoy a long season here but are mostly finished so I am loving a view of yours!

Thalia is a beauty and good at coming back each year too. And that is a lovely magnolia. It has been a gorgeous week for the garden – so many lovely things popping up. Even here in Cornwall we have had the sun! Yay!

An ocean away, and we are enjoying Narcissus ‘Thalia’ at exactly the same time as you. I love seeing what is blooming and happening in your garden. Your Magnolia stellata is stunning. I’ve been looking for a new one this spring to replace one we lost. Here are my six for the week: https://woodlandgnome.wordpress.com/2022/03/26/six-on-saturday-never-quite-perfect/ Cheers!

The Dwarf Magnolia Stellata is new to me. Yours seems to be putting on quite a show. No magnolia of any sort blooming here yet, but the wildflowers are enjoying their time. Here are a few: https://aftereden.blog/2022/03/26/six-on-saturday-26-march-2022/

Hello again! Remember me? I was Hurtledto60 for many years and when I hurtled to 70 I lost my mojo. I am back as ‘For The Love of a Garden’ and returned to the SoS fold. You’ve done well resisting sowing seeds, I’ve scaled down but still done it too early.

N. Thalia is one of my favourites too and my Fuchsia genii got a good haircut yesterday, I forgot last year and it grew so big!

It’s been on my mind for some time – the fatsia japonica. I think the balance has been tipped and one will have to be purchased. Thank you for a lovely sunny spring six! Here’s mine https://n20gardener.com/2022/03/26/six-on-saturday-its-getting-better/ with a nod to pots and toms.

Everything seems so much happier for a bit of sunshine. The Magnolia is a thing of beauty but I’ll pick the Fatsia leaf as my favourite. My plant is still looking rather sorry for itself. I’ll go and give it a talking to. Here’s my Six

Lovely spring post. Glad to hear that you’re enjoying some pleasant weather. The Thalia is beautiful, and your description apt. The wallflower color is quite striking. Here are mine: https://roguegarden.wordpress.com.

That’s a proper Magnolia Stellata not like the poor weedy one in my Six this Week. The sunshine this week has been great, but today may be the last bright one for a while, so I’m off out to enjoy it and will catch up on all the posts later.

Wow to the Magnolia and the Martinette. You’re far hardier than me – it was a tad too cold for shorts here despite the sun. I’m more a tender perennial when it comes to short wearing https://onemanandhisgardentrowel.wordpress.com/2022/03/26/six-on-saturday-26-march-2022/

Shorts in March, that’s where all that running gets you. The magnolia is a beauty though I note the misuse of the adjective ‘dwarf’. It used to be conifers. Container of scented daffs by the front door, very definitely one for next year. Here are mine: https://wp.me/p6bCCa-3ei

Good morning. The sun’s shining and the garden needs to be weeded so that’s my day sorted….although perhaps coffee sitting at the table on the patio is another option? Your daffodils are doing well again, they are such cheerful flowers.

Wow, stellata! What a show. Love the Thalia, must get some for next year, they are smelly too, aren’t they? Just the best time of year. When is your big race? Here are mine https://offtheedgegardening.com/2022/03/26/six-on-saturday-up-up-and-away/

Wonderful weather and plants, the Magnolia stellata is just ab fab.
I’ve just got Thalia coming up in the allotment, nun-like is apt for her somehow, she’s rather modest and pure. Here are my 6:

The Star magnolia is highlighted this weekend. I could have also showed the narcissus Thalia and the fatsia and we would have been very similar but you will see that I have other things in my Six: https://fredgardenerblog2.wordpress.com/2022/03/26/six -on-saturday-26-03-22/

Mine is not exactly what it says it is, but I tried.
Your star magnolia is awesome! It does not do well for us. I can not figure it out. I happen to be in the Pacific Northwest, and saw a Japanese aralia that is as happy as yours. It surprises me because I think of it as a species that does not tolerate hard frost. It looks as good here as it does at home or in Southern California.

I wonder how old your Magnolia stellata is? It’s covered in flowers and a delight. I have also chosen my younger, stellata as one of my six, in fact it’s top of the pops this week. I think they are magnificent. The wallflower is a fantastic colour, loving the sun we’ve has this week. Here are my six: https://kasmaty.blogspot.com/2022/03/sixonsaturday-abundance-of-flowers.html

Brilliant photos! I love that Thalia daffodil—I need to order some! Cheery post. We’ve had some sunny if mostly chilly weather here in Sonoma County California too. The cherries and apples and Asian pears are blooming and the pipevine swallowtail butterflies are out. I’m delighted I get to participate this week, since I finally got a blog together on Friday to meet your time zone.
